“Not true…” – Manchester United insider shuts down rumours surrounding Kobbie Mainoo wage demands

Manchester United are reportedly locked in negotiations with Kobbie Mainoo over a new and improved contract at Old Trafford.

Manchester United star Kobbie Mainoo made a significant impact last season under Erik ten Hag, becoming a key player after his Premier League debut against Everton in November 2023.

His reputation soared further when he scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Manchester City and impressed as one of England’s standout performers at Euro 2024.

While his second season has been less remarkable due to injuries and the adjustment to Ruben Amorim’s system, the 19-year-old remains a crucial part of United’s future plans.

Mainoo, contracted until June 2027, is set to receive a well-earned extension, reflecting both his development and importance to the club.

However, negotiations between the player’s representatives and the club have been ongoing for several months and appears to be stalled.

United insider shuts down Mainoo wage demand rumours

Various rumours have been flying around about why Mainoo has not signed new terms with his boyhood club yet, with the most prominent being the wage demands.

Mainoo, who is currently on around £30,000-per-week, has reportedly been demanding an increase to around £180,000-per-week, which stunned some supporters.

However, Laurie Whitwell has since confirmed that a United insider has told him that these rumours are categorically false.

“When I asked about that, I got a very strong rebuttal to say that is not true,” The Athletic’s journalist told the Stretford Paddock.

“It’s one source but I would trust this person, and so i think just adjust your perspective on that, I would say.

“From my experience of Kobbie Mainoo, I would be surprised if he’s – I know it’s not him – but you know going in there with a kind of determination and a set amount of money.

I think it’s clearly going to be a conversation around, ‘well I’ve done this for the club should that be then recompense really in my salary.’

“Ultimately, Ruben Amorim’s view will come into this I think as well…”

United and Mainoo’s representatives need to find a solution before the summer

United are set to be very busy in the summer transfer window and that will also bring many rumours about players joining and leaving.

There are no questions that a lot of those reports will involve Mainoo’s name if he has not penned new terms by that point.

At this moment in time, the teenager will only be focusing on returning from injury and impressing Amorim when he’s available for selection again.

But the club and his representatives do need to find a solution soon, ideally before that next transfer window begins.
