Not Mainoo: Why insiders believe one Manchester United star has been ‘ruined’ under Ruben Amorim this year

There is a belief that one Manchester United star has been ruined at Old Trafford under Ruben Amorim in 2025 as he continues to struggle at the club.

Manchester United have had a mixed start to the season and currently sit in sixth-place in the Premier League table after 16 games.

The Reds have recorded some impressive victories but there have also been worrying displays, such as the defeat to 10-men Everton at Old Trafford.

Some players have stood out for the Reds such as Matthijs de Ligt and Amad while others have struggled to impress while on the pitch.

Kobbie Mainoo is the player everyone is currently talking about as he could leave in January due to limited game-time but there is another player who is struggling for minutes at Old Trafford.

Why insiders believe one United star has been ‘ruined’

Patrick Dorgu has only started two of the last 10 games for United, with Diogo Dalot being preferred on the left flank despite being right-footed.

The Danish international was signed at the beginning of the year and was the first major addition made under Amorim at Old Trafford.

While there has been plenty of promise from the 21-year-old, there have also been clear concerns and it doesn’t seem like he is ready to play consistently at United.

Amorim criticised the youngster earlier in the season and reports have now emerged suggesting that some at Old Trafford are concerned about Dorgu.

According to The Sun, well-placed sources believe that Dorgu has been ‘overexposed’ under Amorim as he should have been recruited as a squad player.

Another source told the outlet that Dorgu had been ‘ruined’ by an extremely difficult opening 12 months at Old Trafford.

While United has not been a brilliant environment for youngsters to thrive for a long time now, the last year has posed some extreme challenges.

One change could help Dorgu

Dorgu’s biggest problem at United is the role that the wingbacks under Amorim are tasked with doing. Those players are crucial to the attack at Old Trafford and the Dane does not have the consistency in the final third.

The wingbacks are often the ‘out-ball’ for the Reds in attack and while Amad is dangerous when presented with one-on-one opportunities on the right, Dorgu does not thrive in those zones.

It is something he must improve if he wants to turn things around at United but he also might benefit from playing in a traditional left-back role in the future.

Having the support of a winger ahead of him would simplify Dorgu’s offensive responsibilities and allow him to focus more on the defensive side of things, where he is stronger.

Amorim is currently considering the possibility of playing a back four more often at United and while Luke Shaw would be the first-choice option at left-back, it would be interesting to see if that change would benefit Dorgu.
