Alan Shearer has fumed about one moment during Manchester United’s win over Manchester City on the weekend following a statement from the Premier League.
Manchester United claimed a convincing 2–0 victory over rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford in a dominant Premier League performance.
From the opening whistle to the final minute, United were in control, defending resolutely while consistently threatening going forward on the break.
Michael Carrick’s side showcased their superiority across the pitch, limiting City’s chances and dictating the tempo of the match.
The Reds found the net five times over the 90 minutes, though three goals were ruled out for marginal offside decisions. Despite this, strikes from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu proved sufficient to seal a deserved and vital three points.
Shearer fumes about United moment vs City
There was only one moment across the 90 minutes on Saturday where it looked like United were in trouble and it was after Diogo Dalot fouled Jérémy Doku.
VAR reviewed the incident, which saw Dalot’s studs towards Doku’s knee, and decided that a yellow card was enough. Afterwards, the Premier League explained how the contact was ‘glancing and not with excessive force’.
“The referee’s call of yellow card to Dalot for a reckless challenge was checked and confirmed by VAR – with the contact deemed to be glancing and not with excessive force,” a statement read.
This is not something that ex-Newcastle striker Alan Shearer agreed with, and he explained how it was ‘nonsense’ that Dalot was not sent off.
“It is as clear a red card you’re going to see. They came out deeming it to be ‘glancing’, that is nonsense,” Shearer said of Dalot’s tackle on Match of the Day.
“That is as straight and full on and as high and dangerous as you’re going to see and he’s endangering the opponent and it’s a straight red card.”
United deserved some luck
Dalot was very fortunate to stay on the pitch, but United have had enough poor officiating decision go against them in recent months.
It was part of a trend across the game, however, with United winning the majority of duels against their City counterparts.
Carrick’s side wanted it more in the derby and while they got away with one poor moment of officiating, there will undoubtably be a bad decision around the corner for the Reds.
