One Manchester United star has been told he must find a new club this summer in a savage transfer verdict from former defender Paul Parker.
Manchester United are shifting their focus to outgoings this summer as Rúben Amorim plans a major overhaul of his squad at Old Trafford.
The club have already secured Matheus Cunha in a £62.5 million deal from Wolverhampton Wanderers and are in ongoing negotiations for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo. Their offer of £45 million plus £10 million in add-ons was turned down, but discussions remain active.
United are aiming to bring in a new striker and midfielder, with a goalkeeper also potentially on the agenda if André Onana moves on.
While several departures have already been confirmed with contracts expiring at the end of the month, a number of other players are also expected to leave during the window.
Mount told he must find new club
With United looking to offload those who have made little impact under Amorim since his arrival, former United defender Paul Parker, who played 146 times under Sir Alex Ferguson, has explained that midfielder Mason Mount must find a new club this summer.
“I’ve said it before, but I just can’t ever see him having a key role at Manchester United,” Parker said, rather savagely. “He has no standout qualities, and now we’re really seeing why Chelsea were happy to let him go.”
“He’s played a bit because other players have been rested, and yes, he’s scored, but I haven’t seen anything more from him. He’s clearly one of those players who would benefit from finding a new club.
“I think he needs to figure out who he is as a footballer. What is his identity? He has no identity. Nobody knows what he’s actually good at, and I don’t even think he knows himself.
“He looks like a lost boy out there, so first and foremost, he needs to find his identity. Otherwise, he won’t succeed at a new club either.”
Cunha and Mbeumo arrivals can benefit Mount
Contrary to Parker’s claims, the pending arrivals of Cunha and Mbeumo could be a blessing in disguise for the injury-hit Mount, who has made just 46 appearances for United since he signed in 2023, many of which have come from the bench.
Mount’s injuries have been similar to those of Luke Shaw, with the English midfielder suffering from several muscle issues rather than impact injuries.
Shaw has had the same issue, but his problems have often subsided if he has been part of United’s pre-season and faced competition, most recently when he competed for the left-back spot with Tyrell Malacia in the 2022/23 campaign.
Mount is desperate to succeed at United – he has made this very clear – and can play both on the left and right flanks. Amorim himself has been very open in praising Mount’s abilities as a creative and goalscoring outlet when on form.
With Mbeumo and Cunha as competition, the player has the perfect motivation to stay fit and earn a spot in Amorim’s team. Additionally, with the trio competing for minutes, this will limit Mount’s playing time, which can help keep him fit and fresh for the season.
