“No point…” – Ruben Amorim addresses Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s biggest mistake at Man United

Ruben Amorim originally wanted to wait until the season finished to leave Sporting Lisbon and join Manchester United.

That isn’t how things worked out. Manchester United chiefs told Ruben Amorim that it was now or never and he knew that it was too big an opportunity to turn down.

However, it could have easily been different. If the club sacked Erik ten Hag in the summer, the Portuguese boss could have had an entire pre-season and £200 million to work with in the transfer window.

Instead, he has joined a mid-season mess and has explained that the team have to focus on ‘surviving’ as they sit 14th in the Premier League table.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his leadership group have to see this as their biggest mistake so far. Allowing Ten Hag to start the season has cost them valuable time and money, and has undoubtably set back their plans.

Amorim addresses mid-season United move

Amorim knew that it would be difficult to join the Old Trafford outfit midway through a struggling season but he does not want to blame the hierarchy and says he knew the hand he was dealt when he decided to join.

“There’s no point to talk about that or to think about that, I’m here, I have to focus on the job,” he said when asked by journalists about his initial desire to join the club in the summer.

“It’s part football to have these difficult moments. I already knew it was going to be tough.

“Of course you expect to win more games, to have players with more confidence, to sell the idea and to work and to improve a lot of things.

“In this moment, it’s really hard and like I said we have to survive to have time and then to improve the team.”

It won’t immediately get easier for United

It will be a long road at United, and it’s difficult to look past the decision to extend Ten Hag’s contract last summer as a monumental mistake.

Looking ahead, the Reds have extremely difficult fixtures against the likes of Newcastle United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Things will not immediately get easier. United’s eighth-place finish last year was a vast overachievement and it seems like they are finally where they deserve to be in the league table.

Ratcliffe and his team must be staring at the balance sheets right now and figuring out how they can help strengthen Amorim’s squad next month after putting him into the impossible job.
