“No identity…” – Manchester United star “would benefit” from Old Trafford exit despite Ruben Amorim pushing to keep him

One Manchester United star has been told he would benefit from an exit this summer despite Rúben Amorim pushing to keep the player at Old Trafford.

As Manchester United’s abysmal 2024/25 Premier League campaign comes to a close and the summer transfer window beckons, a number of United players find themselves on the chopping block.

Ruben Amorim’s much needed rebuild this summer will be critical for the future of the club, with the Portuguese coach looking to revitalise his squad with players that suit his 3-4-2-1 system.

United’s midfield looks to be due for a major shakeup this summer, with the likes of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro expected to leave, and others with rumours of a potential move away from Old Trafford.

One player whose future may be in doubt at United is Mason Mount, who’s had quite the stop-start season, with a number of injuries disrupting any potential momentum.

A scathing review of Mount’s time at United

After his £55 million move from Chelsea in 2023, injuries have cast a doubt on his future at Old Trafford, and despite public support from Amorim, former United defender Paul Parker doesn’t think Mount has what it takes to succeed at United, despite Amorim pushing to keep the player this summer.

Speaking to AceOdds, Parker said, “I’ve said it before, but I just can’t ever see him having a key role at Manchester United, he has no standout qualities and now we’re really seeing why Chelsea were happy to let him go.”

“He’s played a bit because other players have been rested, and yes, he’s scored, but I haven’t seen anything more from him. He’s clearly one of those players who would benefit from finding a new club.”

“He looks like a lost boy out there, so first and foremost, he needs to find his identity. Otherwise, he won’t succeed at a new club either.”

What does Mount’s future look like at United?

There’s no doubt that Amorim would’ve been excited by the prospect of managing the 26-year-old when he took over last November, but Mount’s poor injury record means that Amorim hasn’t been able to work with the Englishman all that much.

With Amorim having to coach some players through games to try and get them up to speed with his 3-4-2-1 tactical system, it would’ve been a relief for the manager to know that Mount is very adept in that system, having played in it under Thomas Tuchel.

Often played as a central attacking midfielder or a winger, his versatility across the front line, hard-working attitude, and tactical awareness are all qualities that Amorim values.

It remains to be seen where Mount’s future lies, but it would be a real shame for the 26-year-old to leave Old Trafford without showing the fans what he’s truly capable of and stringing some great performances together
