Ruben Amorim has been sent a specific target at Manchester United this season by a club legend and it seems like Sir Jim Ratcliffe agrees with it.
Manchester United’s campaign has gotten off to an uneven start, with just one victory from their first four outings.
There have been positives in the league – particularly in clashes with Arsenal and Burnley – but the shock Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Grimsby Town was a major setback.
Ruben Amorim will be eager to see clear improvement after the international break, while also counting on his players to come through the week without new injury concerns.
The Reds have a tough run of games when they return, starting with an away clash against rivals Manchester City next Sunday.
Amorim sent specific United target
Former United striker Dwight Yorke has spoken about Amorim and his struggles, but believes that the Portuguese manager has ‘no excuses’ this season.
After getting a new strike-force, the United legend believes that the Reds must finish within the top six of the Premier League this season.
“I still think even though we’re going through a transition period, which we have been for God knows how long – it’s been such a long time and you can’t continue to be in a transition,” Yorke told Jackpot City Casino.
“I think United are still good enough to be in the top five, top six. I don’t see them outside of that, despite the dismal run and obviously coming off a last season where they finished their lowest ever in Premier League history. I don’t think there will be a repeat.
“They’ve spent over 200 million this season so far, and you expect them to be back in the top four or pushing for a top four spot.
“I would think the least that they will be saying in that dressing room, and probably what Amorim is targeting with his players, is to be in the top four. Anything outside of that, I think sixth is acceptable, but anything outside of that is just really not good enough. United ought to be in a far better position.
“Despite the changes, despite where we finished last season, there is no excuse that we shouldn’t be in the top six in my opinion.”
Ratcliffe agrees with Amorim demand
This is a view shared by many supporters and reports have even suggested that Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the management team at Old Trafford believe that a top six finish is necessary.
United have missed out on Europe entirely for the second season since Sir Alex Ferguson retired. If they are knocked out of the FA Cup early, the Reds could play fewer games in a season than any campaign in the last 100 years.

The club cannot be outside of European places again for next season, and Amorim will need to find consistency in order to match these demands.
He will be hoping that things click in attack soon, with the new additions of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško.
