Nicky Butt highlights ‘shocking’ Ruben Amorim decision, he is wasting Manchester United’s ‘top talent’

Nicky Butt has highlighted Ruben Amorim’s ‘shocking’ decision that is wasting one of Manchester United’s ‘top talents’.

Manchester United’s disappointing start to the 2025/26 campaign took another turn for the worse on Saturday, as the Reds suffered a damning 3-1 defeat to Brentford.

Ruben Amorim’s wait for back-to-back Premier League wins has had to wait as their attempts to rise the table were stunted by Bryan Mbeumo’s former side.

The Reds now sit in 14th in the league, and many pundits are speculating as to whether Amorim is on borrowed time at the club.

A former Manchester United coach, Nicky Butt, has given his opinion on the current status of the club, and has highlighted one ‘top talent’ who is being wasted.

Fernandes being wasted

Butt said, via United In Focus, “The only way you score a goal over the last 18 months was Bruno. Now Bruno has come deeper, so you’ve lost that as well. I think you’ve got worse.

“The only bright light has been Bruno, and I was one of his critics because I think he doesn’t do what I like as a footballer. But he’s a top, top talent and scores goals. But now he’s not playing deep.

“So you’ve lost that as well. It’s shocking what’s happened.”

It appears as if people are losing faith in Amorim as the weeks pass, with him seeming stubborn enough to die by his own sword, as opposed to adapting his philosophy.

Amorim’s stubbornness causing concern

Despite a dismal campaign in the 2024/25 season, there were some shining lights for the Reds. A few of these being Bruno Fernandes, Amad, and Kobbie Mainoo.

The issue for United this season, however, is that they are not getting anywhere near the best out of these three stars, due to Amorim’s system not allowing them to play in their natural positions.

Fernandes is being forced into a deeper role, as Butt stated, whilst Amad is playing as a wing-back most the time, and Mainoo can’t find a way into the starting XI.

If Amorim can’t figure out a way to get the best out of his stars soon enough, then the writing may be on the wall for him as the United manager.
