Nicky Butt claims ex-Manchester United manager was set up to fail, “He didn’t get enough time…”

Nicky Butt has claimed that a former Manchester United manager was set up to fail, as he didn’t get enough time in the job.

Manchester United have looked like a rejuvenated team under Michael Carrick, with the side currently on a three-game winning streak.

With performances that dominated Manchester City and Arsenal, as well as the courage to record an emphatic win against Fulham, Carrick is making a compelling case to take the job permanently.

The club are currently fourth in the league on 41 points, sitting five points behind Aston Villa in third as they try to cement their position to return to Champions League football.

Whether it is Carrick or a new face, whoever gets the job in the summer will become the seventh permanent manager since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Butt believes Moyes should have more time

The word ‘time’ gets bandied about regularly whenever a manager leaves and the next fails.

From David Moyes to most recently Ruben Amorim, there are always sections of fans that suggest the previous manager did not receive enough time or backing.

Moyes, however, was in the unique situation where he faced the seemingly impossible task of being the direct successor to Sir Alex on the back of United’s last league victory.

Former Manchester United player Nicky Butt suggested on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast that not only was Moyes unlucky to not have time, but he was not fully supported.

He said: ‘I don’t think he (Moyes) should have got sacked at United. No. He didn’t get enough time. He didn’t get enough time.

“He should have got more time. And also, the only mistake I think he made was that he didn’t have anyone. Someone should have been there for him, someone like Mike Phelan or someone.”

Pressure on INEOS for next appointment

The pressure on the likes of David Wilcox, Omar Berrada and Christopher Vivell has been ramped up to ensure they get the next permanent appointment spot on.

Their handling of the Erik Ten Hag situation, where they spoke to other managers before triggering his contract extension, before sacking him early in the 2024/25 season, was already seen as a big failure.

In hindsight, the appointment of Amorim was a catastrophic failure: bringing in a manager mid-season with a unique system that did not suit the players. Sir Jim Ratcliffe claimed in interviews that he would give Amorim time before Amorim was ultimately sacked.

Whether they choose to keep Carrick or bring in a big name like Thomas Tuchel, they need to bring in a coach that suits the players and have the conviction to back the manager and support them, in a way they did not with Amorim or Ten Hag.
