Manchester United succumbed to a 2-0 loss against Newcastle United as United moved down to fourth place in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag made three changes to the starting 11 that beat Fulham in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

With Diogo Dalot coming in for Aaron Wan Bissaka who could not feature due to illness, Raphael Varane replaced Harry Maguire in defence as well.

Antony was back from illness as he came in for Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial was on the bench after his hip injury.

In the first 10 minutes, Newcastle started on the front foot with a big chance from Sean Longstaff which was blocked by Lisandro Martinez.

Newcastle fans, from the start, were making the atmosphere intimidating as they acted as the 12th man in the cauldron of St. James Park.

Wout Weghorst has his first chance of the game but could not find the target from the right side.

David De Gea made two outstanding saves within the same play from an Alexander Isak header and a Joe Willock shot, as the Magpies kept up the pressure.

After 20 minutes, Manchester United had only regiatered one shot, which did not register on target, as Eddie Howe’s side looked to minimalise the Red Devils’ chances.

Dalot was found by Fernandes after the half-hour mark, however, the Portuguese right-back could not convert.

Longstaff had another great chance which could not find the top left corner of De Gea’s goal.

A passage of play from Dalot and Antony worked well but Weghorst or Marcus Rashford could not get on the end of the cross.

Willock had a brilliant chance to put the home side in front, his shot went over the bar as United looked like they got away with that chance.

Antony drifted around the back of a United corner and tried to volley the ball into the Newcastle net however his shot sailed over the bar.

For the first time this season, United were going into half-time with no shot on target in the first half of a game.

Ten minutes into the first half, Antony registered United’s first shot of the game from outside of the box as he cut inside but hit a weak shot at Pope.

Joe Willock and Newcastle took the lead in the 65th minute with Bruno Guimaraes making a lofted pass over to Allan Saint-Maximin who heads the ball to the arriving Willock.

De Gea came to the aid of Manchester United again making a save from a Joelinton header.

Substitute Anthony Martial had a shot deflected off Fabian Schar which ended up going out of play for a United corner that was subsequently headed over the bar by Victor Lindelof.

In the 87th minute, Callum Wilson nodded in Newcastle’s second of the game and his 8th of the season from a Kieran Trippier free kick as United did not get close enough to the Englishman in the six-yard box.

United now move down into fourth place in the Premier League table with Newcastle moving into third.

Manchester United next face Brentford on Wednesday at 20:00 BST.
