Napoli on red alert as Man United decide against contract extension for ‘perfect’ star
Manchester United have six players with expiring contracts at the end of the current season, who can all begin to negotiate with foreign clubs this month.
Under FIFA rules, players with contracts expiring at the end of the season can begin negotiating pre-contract agreements with foreign clubs in January.
United have seen several high-profile departures on free transfers in recent years, including Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani.
As the January window approaches, the club is reportedly focused on making sales in order to finance signings for Ruben Amorim’s squad, particularly at left wingback.
While reinforcements are a priority, the club must also address the futures of the six players with contracts set to expire this summer.
United unwilling to extend Maguire’s current deal
Tom Heaton, Jonny Evans, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, Christian Eriksen, Harry Maguire and Amad Diallo all have their contracts at United expiring in June 2025.
Out of those six players, Amad and Maguire have the option for the club to extend their current deals by 12 months.
According to the Telegraph, the Reds are ‘reluctant’ to trigger the 12-month extension in Maguire’s existing deal, where he earns around £190,000-a-week.
It was explained that United are in talks with the England defender over a new deal, most likely on a lower wage than he currently is on.
Napoli on red alert for Maguire
However, that still means Maguire is now free to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs, with Napoli and Galatasaray interested in the player.
Reports from The Athletic claim that the Italian club see the defender as an ‘interesting option’ after they signed Scott McTominay from Old Trafford last summer.
That deal has been a great success for them so far, with the Scotsman becoming a key player for Antonio Conte’s side.

Ruben Amorim previously described Maguire as the ‘perfect’ defender to play in the middle of a back three but it is understandable that the club do not want to extend him on his current wages.
Nevertheless, that will likely keep Napoli on red alert as they try to convince the defender of a switch to Italy next season.
