“My expectation…” – What Manchester United players have said about Senne Lammens starting vs Chelsea

Senne Lammens has been working behind the scenes and impressing Manchester United teammates at Carrington over the last couple of weeks.

Manchester United moved into the summer transfer window looking for a new goalkeeper and eventually secured the signing of promising 23-year-old Senne Lammens.

The Belgian impressed with his displays for Royal Antwerp over the past year, catching the attention of United’s scouting team. However, stepping up to the demands of Premier League football will be a major test.

With André Onana sent out on loan, Altay Bayındır has held onto the starting role. The Turkish international featured again in the derby against Manchester City but looked shaky and prone to mistakes.

Lammens was named among the substitutes, though he will be eager to take his opportunity soon as Ruben Amorim searches desperately for consistency and reliability between the posts.

What United players have said about Lammens starting

While he is yet to receive his debut, Lammens has been impressing his teammates in training at Carrington. Tom Heaton has praised his ‘goalkeeping fundamentals’.

It has also been claimed that United teammates feel that Lammens is ‘ready-made’ for the Premier League as conversations build over his potential debut against Chelsea.

That is according to information from Ben Jacobs, who explained that Lammens is expected to be the outright no.1 by the time the next international break finishes.

“Senne Lammens is impressing behind the scenes and a lot of the players feel he is ready-made for the Premier League,” Jacobs told the United Stand.

“My expectation is that once we pass the international break in October, Senne Lammens will be the no.1 for Manchester United week-in, week-out in the Premier League.

“It could come before, it could come against Chelsea but I think Lammens has been signed as the no.1 and he will be that no.1 sooner rather than later.”

Lammens priority must be to show calm after Bayındır nerves

Bayındır’s time in the lineup could be over now, but even if he has one or two more games, it is incredibly unlikely that he does anything to convince Amorim that he should stay in goal.

In all four of his Premier League appearances so far this season, the Turkish international has looked nervous even before his mistakes have come.

For a defensive unit, it is horrible to know that your goalkeeper cannot handle the pressure and that is the number one priority for Lammens when he enters the side.

Mistakes will come for the 23-year-old, that is inevitable, but he needs to be able to show that he can remain calm in games even when those situations occur.
