Paul Scholes has blasted Marcus Rashford for his behaviour as Erik ten Hag substituted him during Saturday’s loss against Newcastle.

Manchester United fell to a humiliating 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United on Saturday evening, with Anthony Gordon’s second-half tap-in burying Erik ten Hag‘s men to seventh in the Premier League table.

Marcus Rashford has been a particular focus after the game, with the player being blasted by Jermaine Jenas for his attitude, and Paul Scholes has explained that he feels Rashford was doing “more harm than good” against Newcastle.

Many pointed out that Rashford, despite lacking in defensive work ethic on Saturday evening, seemed surprised when he was substituted in favour of Antony in the second half, with Scholes not understanding why.

“He’s surprised? I don’t understand,” Scholes said. “He thinks he should still be on the pitch? He was doing more harm to the team than good.”

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag was asked about Rashford’s performance and poor form, with the Dutch manager saying he “will talk to him and not with the media” about the winger.

Ten Hag added: “He works hard. He will get back. He will recover and will get all our support.”

Harry Maguire also issued a message of support for his club and international teammate, citing Rashford’s 30-goal campaign last season as proof he will return to his best form.

“Marcus had an unbelievable season last season,” Maguire told TNT Sports. “This season, it hasn’t clicked for him. He’s working hard. Everyone in that dressing room knows what he’s about.”
