Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha believes that mistakes that André Onana may make under Erik ten Hag will not matter as the squad will score more goals because of his presence.

Manchester United are edging closer to the signing of goalkeeper André Onana after David de Gea left the club after 12 seasons of service – and former striker Louis Saha believes the signing has great potential due to the new dynamic that the Inter Milan goalkeeper can provide.

“I think so,” he told BetFred when asked if he thinks Onana will be a success under Erik ten Hag at United.

“He’s a top goalkeeper that’s eager to improve and he’s 27 years old, so he’s got plenty of experience but isn’t old at all for a goalkeeper. The manager is looking to play out from the back and see how he can disrupt the opposition.

“I believe Onana will be very important for Manchester United. Of course, all goalkeepers make mistakes that lead to goals but in André’s case, the team is going to score more goals because of him.

“It takes time for players to adjust to a new league, but I’m certain it’s going to be a perfect fit as he was able to play in a very strictly structured Inter Milan team and was still able to revolutionise the squad with his forward-thinking, so I have no doubt that he’s going to do the same at Manchester United.”

Ten Hag spoke on Onana after United’s 2-0 victory over Leeds on Wednesday afternoon.

“Of course,” he said when asked if it is important to complete the signing of Onana quickly. “Goalkeeper is a key position, but I am happy with the players we have now.”
