Michael Carrick delivered the perfect response when asked about one of his Manchester United players this week.
Manchester United delivered a commanding display at Old Trafford last weekend to claim a 2–0 Premier League win over Manchester City.
United were in control from start to finish, with Michael Carrick’s side pairing defensive discipline with purposeful attacking play. The hosts found the net on five occasions, although three goals were ruled out following marginal offside decisions.
Despite those frustrations, strikes from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu sealed a vital and fully deserved victory.
For Dorgu, the goal marked his fourth direct contribution in six appearances, highlighting a strong upturn in form following earlier criticism from former boss Ruben Amorim.
Carrick’s perfect response about ‘immense’ United star
Dorgu, 21, has experienced some difficulties since arriving at Old Trafford and Amorim criticised him for being too ‘anxious’ in games.
Since then, the Danish international has improved his form and become one of the club’s better performers in recent weeks.
Carrick decided to use him as a left-winger in a 4-2-3-1 formation last week against City and the decision paid off, with Dorgu playing well all game and scoring the second goal in the 2-0 win.
“I think he can do both,” responded Carrick when asked by journalists whether Dorgu will be a fullback or winger going forward.
“He was immense last week. His work rate and the way he plays the position, his general play was something we’re really pleased about.
“I wouldn’t want to pin him down, because I think he can do both. Certainly attacking-wise, and that threat, he was pretty impressive last week.”
Dorgu eager to continue impressing
Carrick has decided against pinning down a position for Dorgu and it is understandable why. The 21-year-old can be a very useful weapon on the wing but his long-term future seems to be as an attacking fullback.
Dorgu’s display against City showed how useful a profile like Dorgu can be on the wings and Carrick will have to decide when it is best to use him in that role.
But, more importantly, the United boss is trying to build confidence in the young player. Dorgu looks like he’s getting more comfortable in the team due to his performances.
He will be hoping to start against Arsenal this weekend, continue that good form and help United get a surprise three points at the Emirates Stadium, although it will not be an easy task.
