Michael Carrick sings praises of ‘important’ Man Utd star but he won’t start vs Fulham

Michael Carrick has sung the praises of one ‘important’ star at Manchester United ahead of the upcoming clash with Fulham.

Manchester United welcome Fulham to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, with Michael Carrick aiming to extend his unbeaten start as interim manager.

United have enjoyed back-to-back victories over Manchester City and Arsenal in Carrick’s opening two matches in charge, collecting six points against the Premier League’s top two sides. Both performances were impressive, showcasing resilience and quality against elite opposition.

However, a different test now awaits as an in-form Fulham side travel to Manchester looking to spring a surprise. The Cottagers sit seventh in the table, just four points behind United in fourth.

Unlike the clashes with City and Arsenal, the Reds will be expected to control proceedings and secure all three points in this encounter.

Carrick sings praises of ‘important’ United star

Carrick has spoken to the media ahead of the clash with Fulham and he was asked about various of United’s star players, including Mason Mount.

The English midfielder came off the bench against City and scored, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. He was then an unused substitute at Arsenal.

Despite having a small role to play under Carrick so far, the United boss has offered praise for Mount and explained how he has an important role to play at Old Trafford.

“I’m a big fan of Mason. There are so many things to like about him. His quality to start with, his personality, his attitude,” said Carrick.

“That’s why we’ve got the squad; certain times, certain games, certain players will play. As we work through the season, that’ll come to fruition.

“I like Mason a lot and he’s an important player for this team and this club.”

Mount unlikely to start vs Fulham

Despite the praise for Mount, Carrick is unlikely to bring him into the United team this weekend even though Patrick Dorgu is missing through injury.

The United boss will probably turn to Matheus Cunha or Benjamin Šeško instead, while Bryan Mbeumo and Amad are expected to keep their places in the team.

But the ex-Chelsea player will be looking at Cunha as an example of how he can still have a major role to play in the upcoming clash.

The Brazilian did not start either of the last two games but had a major part to play off the bench. Now that he is likely to start, Mount could be expected to provide that impact off the bench and he will be hoping to impress Carrick.
