Michael Carrick has warned his Manchester United stars about the real threat that Everton pose as the two sides face off in the Premier League.
Manchester United return to Premier League action on Monday evening after a 13-day break, with Michael Carrick’s side travelling to face Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
It will be the senior men’s first match at Everton’s new ground, though United’s women previously secured a 4–1 WSL win over the Toffees there in October 2025.
Carrick’s team will be looking to bounce back from their 1–1 draw away to West Ham United two weeks ago. Sitting fourth in the table, United remain firmly in contention for Champions League qualification.
The competition is close, however. Chelsea are just one point behind in fifth, while Liverpool are three points adrift, leaving little margin for error against David Moyes’ side.
United must watch out for Moyes’ experience
United’s faithful are familiar with Moyes, with the Scotsman having taken charge of the club for ten months after Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, although he was fired before the 2013/14 season even came to a close.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Carrick was asked how he plans to beat Everton. While he did not divulge any tactics, the United boss was quick to praise Moyes as a manager with experience who will know how to set his side out to win on Monday night.
“Listen, there’s a lot goes into a game,” Carrick said. “David’s teams are hard to play against, you know, and he’s such a good manager, and with the experience he’s got and knowing what it takes to have success in this league, and it’s a new challenge for us, you know, it’s one we’re looking forward to.
“I think it’s one where we’ve had a lot of time to kind of, to look forward to it. So yeah, it’s gonna take a lot, going away to Everton.”

The atmosphere will play a major role
There has also been a fair amount of talk about how Everton’s atmosphere will play a role. Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton made the point earlier this week, stating that the Toffees’ “amazing” atmosphere will make it “tough” for Carrick’s Reds.
“I know it’s a new stadium, but historically, it’s always been tough,” Carrick said, harking back to his playing days with United, Newcastle, Tottenham, and Villa. He played 24 times against Everton across his career, winning 13, drawing 6, and losing 5.
“It’s always been the atmosphere and the supporters that they create. I think it’s always been one of the toughest ones that I’ve played away from home, so we’re aware of that.
“And then trying to be our best way we can, you know. I think we’ve got things to improve on, but we’ve got a good base and a good foundation moving forward. Good spirit. So we’ll have to draw on pretty much all of that on Monday night.”
