Manchester United have been told that a guarantee from Michael Carrick would ‘tempt’ an impressive Premier League player to join the club.
Michael Carrick enjoyed a dream start to his spell as Manchester United’s caretaker head coach on Saturday afternoon, overseeing a commanding victory over Manchester City.
United ran out 2–0 winners at Old Trafford, recording their third clean sheet of the season, and could easily have added to the scoreline with three further goals ruled out for marginal offside decisions.
Despite the intense build-up and surrounding noise ahead of the derby, Carrick outmanoeuvred Pep Guardiola and guided the Reds to a standout, memorable performance.
He will now want to continue that high in the next game against league-leaders Arsenal, with United visiting the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
United may also be keeping one eye on the transfer window as the Reds consider strengthening the centre of midfield at Old Trafford.
Carrick guarantee would “tempt” Premier League ace of United move
It was confirmed on Thursday evening that Casemiro will leave the club when his contract expires in the summer, and that has only reinforced the need for midfield additions.
Ex-Red Mikael Silvestre has been speaking about the potential options for United to sign in midfield this year, with the likes of Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba considered ‘great additions’.
Silvestre also name-dropped ex-United academy player James Garner, who has been shining for Everton this season under David Moyes and has just signed a new contract.
He believes that Garner could still be tempted to make an Old Trafford return despite his recent renewal as long as he was guaranteed minutes under Carrick.
“There are plenty of options available on the market too and I believe Adam Wharton at Crystal Palace and Carlos Baleba at Brighton would both be great additions to the squad,” Silvestre told Esports Insider.
“Former youth player James Garner is also a possibility – he’s at Everton now, but he might be tempted to return to Old Trafford if he was guaranteed minutes under Michael Carrick.”
Garner contract creates issues
Garner has become a solid Premier League midfielder and he would certainly be a great squad option at United. Some fans would claim that he should have never left the club.
But his fresh contract at Everton does create some problems for United if they want to sign him, as the Toffees would not allow him to leave on the cheap.

United are going to be spending big on a player like Baleba or Wharton and it would have been perfect to sign someone like Garner for free in the summer.
Garner may still be on his former club’s radar for the summer but he certainly won’t come cheap and there are likely others ahead of him in the list now.
