Michael Carrick explains why Benjamin Šeško doesn’t start vs Everton amid Lisandro Martínez update

Michael Carrick has explained why Benjamin Šeško has not been selected to start for Manchester United against Everton despite his goals of late.

Michael Carrick has sparked a resurgence at Manchester United, guiding the side to a five-match unbeaten streak and collecting 13 of a possible 15 points in the Premier League.

In their latest outing, Benjamin Šeško rescued a point with a dramatic 96th-minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw against West Ham at the London Stadium.

With impressive victories over Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur during this run, many believe Carrick has made a strong case to be handed the role on a permanent basis at Old Trafford.

The Reds now face another tough test against Everton at their new Hill Dickinson stadium on Monday evening. A victory could put United within three points of third-placed Aston Villa.

Carrick issues update on Martínez

Unfortunately for the team, Lisandro Martínez is not in the side after he suffered a calf injury in the build-up to the game. Leny Yoro have come into the backline alongside Harry Maguire.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the game, Carrick said, “Yeah, unfortunately he just picked up something during the week.

“It doesn’t seem too bad at all, but we’re just kind of working through that at the moment, so he’s not available tonight.

“He’s obviously done well Licha, for us, and it’s disappointing. But Leny came in and did particularly well at West Ham so Leny comes in and we’ll try and move forward.”

Why Šeško hasn’t started vs Everton

Further, the United boss was asked why Šeško had still not been picked despite a growing want from fans to see their 22-year-old star play from the start.

“He has done great to be honest,” Carrick said when asked what he’s made of Šeško so far. “He is still young and he is still learning and he is still adapting to life here.

“He’s taken big steps even in the short time we have been together and he’s in a good place. There is a little bit of managing it. He is ready, looks a real threat, is a presence and he’s confidence.

“Making selections is not straightforward, but having Ben to come on and finish games as he has done recently is a great thing for us to have. He is going to be a big player at this club for a long time. I have been hugely impressed with what he’s done already but there is loads more to come from him.”
