Michael Carrick explains how three Man Utd stars helped Benjamin Šeško score West Ham equaliser

Benjamin Šeško scored a last-minute equaliser against West Ham earlier this week but was helped by several of his Manchester United teammates.

Manchester United have enjoyed a strong run of results under interim manager Michael Carrick, who is set to remain in charge until the end of the season.

The Reds claimed four successive victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur before earning a hard-fought point away at West Ham on Tuesday night.

Although it was the first match during Carrick’s spell in which United failed to truly impress, they showed resilience and determination, grabbing a late equaliser to secure a share of the spoils.

With a short break before their next fixture against Everton, Carrick will be aiming to steer United back to winning form as they continue their push for qualification to next season’s Champions League.

Carrick explains how three stars helped Šeško score West Ham equaliser

It was a huge moment for Benjamin Šeško to score the last-minute equaliser against The Hammers, partly because it extends United’s unbeaten run.

But Carrick has explained how there are other players who contributed to the result despite Šeško grabbing the headlines for scoring the goal.

“With the West Ham game, Ben gets a lot of headlines and rightly so because it was a massive moment and he’s done great,” Carrick said on the Inside Carrington podcast.

“The other side of that is the spirit that Leny [Yoro showed] defending the two counter-attacks and putting two big challenges in.

“And seeing Bryan [Mbeumo]’s recovery runs and Amad’s recovery runs. It’s quite easy to lose that game 2-0 in the circumstances but that’s when the spirit counts.

“I’ve spoke to the players about that, spirit doesn’t just come from scoring late and the big highlights, spirit comes from tougher situations and finding your way through it.”

United took a risk

Carrick took a risk at the London Stadium and it was one that was rarely made before his arrival. The United boss threw players forward and it could have easily backfired.

But getting the extra point showed that it was worthwhile and United continue to have positive momentum going forward.

Šeško has received the plaudits but Carrick is right; without the likes of Yoro, Amad and Mbeumo doing crucial defensive work, the equaliser does not happen.

United are playing as a team right now and that is extremely important for them in their push to finish in the top five and secure Champions League football.
