Rúben Amorim has issued updates on a few players as Manchester United prepare to face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.
Manchester United are returning to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon as they face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.
Rúben Amorim’s last fixture saw the club complete a stunning comeback against Olympique Lyonnais at Old Trafford, with a 7-6 aggregate win locking their place in the Europa League semi-final, where they will face Athletic Bilbao.
Amorim will also be looking to get revenge on Vitor Pereira’s side after goals from Matheus Cunha and Hwang Hee-Chan saw Wolves run riot over United with a 2-0 win back in December.
The 40-year-old head coach will no doubt want to see his players use the momentum from the incredible win over Lyon as they head back to domestic competition.
United’s latest injury news
Against Lyon, both Noussair Mazraoui and Victor Lindelöf had to depart Old Trafford at half time due to separate personal incidents, but Amorim confirmed that both players are okay and will therefore hopefully be available for selection against Wolves.
“He [Lindelöf] has personal issues like Nous [Mazraoui], so we had to let him go. But everything is okay now and I know football is important but there are things that are more important. They will be ready to face Wolves in the next game.”
Meanwhile, Amorim hinted that he may have to rest Diogo Dalot on Sunday after the player played 120 minutes against Lyon.
“I have to see it, players like Dalot, they are always ready but today he was really tired,” Amorim said when asked if he has to take risks with his selection against Wolves. “The guys that are at risk to have an injury, we will try to save them so we will see tomorrow [Friday].”
Jonny Evans returned to training earlier this week but is not thought to be completely fit yet, while Amad will not return to the team until next month.
Joshua Zirkzee is out for the season, while Lisandro Martínez may not return until November. Matthijs de Ligt will be back soon but is not expected to be fit to face Wolves, while Ayden Heaven suffered a small setback in training earlier this week. Toby Collyer also remains sidelined.
Amorim provides Obi XI hint
Speaking to the press on Thursday evening, Amorim also provided a hint that Chido Obi will be heavily involved against Wolves amid the absence of Zirkzee.
“Yes, I think so,” the 40-year-old replied when asked if the 17-year-old could feature in the league this season amid the need to rest senior players.
When asked if he believed the Academy players are ready to play senior football, Amorim replied: “I think it is not the best moment or the best season to put some kids to play, because, again, they need a strong base to really show what they can do.
“But in this moment we need to do it and sometimes you have surprises. Ayden [Heaven] just played and I can be honest, we did it because we had injuries in that moment.
“But today, I think Ayden is my player so when he is ready and facing the competition in the team, he is ready to play. So you don’t know. Amass did really well today.
“Chido, when he played, he played quite well. It is a difficult moment, it is not the right moment for the kids to play, but if we have to do it then we will do it.”
