While Manchester United are set to announce Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven in the coming days, Rúben Amorim must look to bring Mathys Tel to Old Trafford this window.

Manchester United have been linked with a loan move for Bayern Munich youngster Mathys Tel, who wants to leave the club and has interest from a number of Premier League clubs.

UtdDistrict understands that United are looking for a loan with an option to buy the 19-year-old in the summer.

United fans will be familiar with Tel, the Frenchman scored an impressive goal off the bench against United at the Allianz Arena in the Champions League group stages last season.

A forward capable of playing either on the left wing or up front, he is considered to be a top talent but hasn’t quite managed to cement his place in the first team at Bayern. United are reportedly interested in a loan deal for Tel.

The young forward’s profile could be a good fit for Rúben Amorim’s United side, UtdDistrict break down why below.

Technical, physical, and positional needs addressed

United need wingers, but with the way Amorim structures his 3-4-3 formation they need ones who are capable of starting and operating inside the pitch, as well as offering the wide qualities you expect from wingers.

As a winger/striker hybrid, this role jumps out as one which suits the 19-year-old forward well. It gives him a mix of wide and central responsibilities and allows him to contribute with the ball and get into goal-scoring positions consistently for United.

Tel is physically powerful for a 19-year-old, controls the ball well, has intelligent movement, and can finish well – which United fans saw in September 2023. These are all qualities which add to United’s frontline now.

Tel’s ability to control the ball in particular and use his body are relevant, he offers United an outlet to relieve pressure and help make the ball stick in attack, something that has been a struggle this season.

His ability to play in multiple positions helps too, with Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee both having been inconsistent this season Tel can fill in as a striker for United if needed. Most importantly, his ability to find the net is an exciting prospect for a United team that have been struggling for goals.

Tel last season got 10 goals and 3 assists in all competitions for Bayern Munich, a strong return given he was 18 throughout the season. The potential for output is certainly there and United very much need it. He is not as much of a guarantee of goals as some other options though.

A loan benefits United

With United in a difficult spot financially and Bayern Munich asking for 60 million Euros, a permanent deal is clearly unaffordable for United right now. A loan with an option to buy, however, could suit United incredibly well.

A loan deal with an option to buy is risk-free. If it does not go well, United don’t have to keep the player and the financial impact upon them is minimal. If it does go well, United can sign a talented player who adds to the quality of the squad and has room to grow.

With Alejandro Garnacho garnering concrete interest from Chelsea and Marcus Rashford likely to leave either this window or in the summer, United do need to start thinking about a replacement.

With the funds limited, a loan with option to buy that sees Tel replace one of the two left sided attackers United have now could be the way.
