Matheus Cunha suffers “accident” in Manchester United training as 28-word statement released

Matheus Cunha has reportedly suffered an accident in Manchester United training, as a 28-word statement is released by VisitAltrincham.

With the November international break drawing to a close, Rúben Amorim is turning his attention back to Manchester United’s upcoming home match against Everton on Monday evening.

United sit seventh in the Premier League table, level with Tottenham in fifth. They trail Sunderland by a single point and are only two points behind Chelsea in third.

After a difficult start to the campaign, United have begun to put together a strong run. They are unbeaten in their last five fixtures and have suffered just one defeat in their previous seven, suggesting their form is steadily improving.

Everton arrive in 13th place, having picked up two victories, two defeats, and a draw across their last five matches. Their 2–0 loss to Fulham before the break has not affected the positive mood in David Moyes’ camp as they prepare for the Old Trafford encounter.

Cunha suffers “accident” in training

United’s fixture on Monday evening has meant that the squad have had an extra two days of rest and availability. The United players reported back to Carrington on Friday, with training on Friday and Saturday afternoon.

Benjamin Šeško, Harry Maguire, and Kobbie Mainoo were absent from team training as they recover from injuries, while the rest attended.

On Satruday, Matheus Cunha was due to turn on the Christmas lights in Altrincham, but in a statement on Instagram, VisitAltrincham have confirmed that the player suffered an “accident” in training on Saturday, and could no longer attend for “medical reasons”.

“Unfortunately, Matheus Cunha has had an accident in training today and will not be able to attend tonight’s Christmas Lights Switch on in Altrincham due to medical reasons,” they wrote on Instagram.

There has yet to be any official comment from the club.

Zirkzee could be given the chance to shine

It has already been confirmed that Šeško will remain out of action for around three weeks due to a knee injury, and Cunha was expected to be the player to take up the centre-forward position, with Mason Mount filling in on the left flank.

However, if the 26-year-old is out of action on Monday evening, then it could be the best chance Joshua Zirkzee has to start a game for the club.

The 24-year-old has not started a single fixture this campaign, playing just 90 minutes across four appearances off the bench, with reports suggesting that he is looking for a route out of the club in January to secure a place in the Netherlands squad for the World Cup.

But, if both Šeško and Cunha are unavailable, then Amorim may turn to Zirkzee to play through the middle, with Mount and Bryan Mbeumo on either side of him. Zirkzee scored two goals against Everton last season at Old Trafford in a 4-0 win.
