Matheus Cunha reacts to Manchester United’s Benjamin Šeško transfer after ‘role model’ admission

Matheus Cunha has reacted to Manchester United’s pursuit of Benjamin Šeško as Rúben Amorim hunts for a new first-choice striker.

Manchester United are nearing the signing of Benjamin Šeško as Rúben Amorim targets his fourth senior addition at Old Trafford this summer.

Following a campaign where Bruno Fernandes finished as top scorer with 19 goals and only three other players reached double figures, Amorim identified the need to revamp his attacking options.

In response, United secured the signings of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo for a combined fee of nearly £130 million, while 18-year-old left-back Diego Leon also joined after initially agreeing to a move earlier in the year.

The club have submitted a proposal worth around £74 million, including add-ons, to land Šeško, who had also attracted interest from Newcastle. He is expected to complete his move to United this week.

Šeško looking to emulate Ibrahimovic

Šeško’s profile is a unique one, with the 22-year-old standing at 195 cm while maintaining quick feet, a good touch, and brilliant speed.

His striker profile is a unique one, with many comparisons drawn between him and United icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic – a player Šeško himself has previously admitted to seeing as a role model.

“The only guy I loved, actually, the most, of course, besides [Cristiano] Ronaldo [and] those guys [who] were always on the front page, let’s say, was Ibrahimović,” Šeško admitted when asked who he looks up to.

“For me, this is a role model and the guy that I watched unbelievably a lot. He is definitely different than me, yes, but just some situations sometimes I try to copy, you know, because he’s just, he’s been always amazing and just the way he is, you know, I like it always.”

Cunha in favour of Šeško’s transfer

With the parallels between Šeško and Ibrahimovic clear, as well as the 22-year-old’s evident love for the former United striker, many see his £74 million move as following in the footsteps of a footballing great.

Šeško is expected to form the final part of a new-look front three under Amorim alongside Cunha and Mbeumo, who will play on the right and left of the Slovenian heading into the new campaign.

While Mbeumo has previously spoken about his love for United’s second-choice striker target, Ollie Watkins, it’s Cunha who seems to be enthusiastic about Šeško’s transfer, liking a photo on Instagram that suggests the striker is following in the footsteps of Ibrahimovic.

While there have been concerns that Šeško’s move could turn out to be an expensive mistake, the fact that the 22-year-old will have Mbeumo, Cunha, Fernandes, Amad, and Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu as creative cushions means he will likely have more time and space to settle than Rasmus Højlund did two seasons ago.
