Manchester United’s new signing Matheus Cunha has made his feelings clear about Marcus Rashford in a recent interview, having taken the no.10 shirt.
Since it was confirmed that Matheus Cunha has joined Manchester United for £62.5million, many speculated as to what shirt number the Brazilian will take.
The 26-year-old wore the no.10 shirt for Wolves in his last campaign for the club, which saw him score 15 Premier League goals in 33 games.
Up until now, the no.10 shirt for Ruben Amorim’s side was Marcus Rashford’s, despite the Englishman spending half of the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Aston Villa.
As it is expected that Rashford will find a new club this summer, United have abruptly stripped him of his shirt number and have since handed it to their new marquee signing.
Cunha’s thoughts on Rashford
In a recent interview with the club, Cunha has recalled past encounters with his new teammates, including one that he had with Rashford during his time at Wolves.
When talking about his new shirt number, Cunha said, “Yeah, wow. It’s something that you always dream about. I can mention many players that use this shirt. It’s so easy for me.
“Of course, I think the one that I always think about when I see this number in this shirt for me was Wayne Rooney. He was someone that I grew up to watch him play and I have (watched) many games now.
“Then I swapped shirts with Marcus [Rashford, after a game] also, I have his shirt in my home. But, of course, we know many players used this shirt – [Ruud] van Nistelrooy, [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic.
“It’s the dream not only to use the shirt, but with all the history they have around the number, it’s something beautiful that I have the privilege to do it.”
Cunha also liked Rashford’s latest Instagram post of him working hard in the gym after the pair followed each other on the social media app.
Will Cunha hit the expected heights?
Cunha’s interaction with Rashford wasn’t the only time that the Brazilian has taken the shirt of United’s want-away winger, as he has now adopted the Englishman’s shirt number.
Although Amorim will be desperate for some more incomings in the coming weeks, he will also be hoping that his new no.10 can help to rid his side of their attacking woes.
Having only scored 44 goals in the last league campaign, there will be a lot of expectation on United’s new boy to help change the club’s fortunes in front of goal.
Saying this, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo could hopefully be on his way to Old Trafford soon enough to further help alleviate Amorim’s attacking issues ahead of the new campaign, as the Reds look to climb up the table.
