Matheus Cunha has responded to a public message from Rúben Amorim as the Manchester United target put on a record-equalling display against Leicester City.
Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha this summer as they aim to strengthen Rúben Amorim’s attacking options.
This season, the team has struggled with consistent goal-scoring, relying heavily on captain Bruno Fernandes, especially after Amad was sidelined for the past two months due to injury.
Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund have combined for just 18 goals this campaign, and only five players have more than ten goal involvements, with Marcus Rashford, who is set to be sold this summer, among them.
As a result, Amorim is targeting players who will fit into his 3-4-3 formation, with Cunha seen as an ideal fit for the left attacking role.
Cunha puts on record-equalling performance
On Saturday afternoon, Wolves hosted Leicester City in the Premier League, with the side running out as 3-0 victors in what was a fantastic fixture at Molineux Stadium.
Cunha was no doubt the pick of the bunch, scoring the first goal before assisting Jørgen Strand Larsen and Rodrigo Gomes, while goalkeeper Jose Sa pulled off a great penalty save to deny Jamie Vardy.
The 25-year-old created five chances during his 89 minutes on the pitch, making nine passes into the final third and winning six fouls, also having six shots. He completed 41 of his 44 attempted passes, wreaking havoc, much to the delight of United fans.
Cunha’s goal was his 15th of the Premier League season, putting him equal with Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Martinelli as the highest number of goals scored in a single season in the competition.
Cunha’s response to Amorim message
Earlier this week, Amorim declared that “everybody wants to play for Manchester United,” which transfer expert Fabrizio Romano explained was a public message from the head coach to Cunha.
With a lot of talk surrounding Cunha having emerged days before Wolves’ win over Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side, there was a lot of pressure on the Brazilian to perform.
Signing for United brings an extra layer of pressure and then some compared to being the star man for Wolves, and Cunha’s impressive performance proves he is a player worthy of starting for the club next season.
It could not have been a more perfect response to Amorim’s claim that every player wants to play for Manchester United, as Cunha is proving that not only does he want to join the club, but he has the mental fortitude to succeed when all eyes are trained on him and his side.
