Matheus Cunha has opened up about the relationship he has formed with Bryan Mbeumo during their opening few months at Manchester United.
Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have been a brilliant addition to Manchester United‘s firepower this season, providing goals and assists consistently and stepping up for the team when it matters most.
With Mbeumo scoring against four of the five ‘Big Six’ teams this season, and Cunha scoring a beautiful late winner at the Emirates, they have already started to become fan favourites at the club.
Another thing that is very apparent about the two new boys is how they have helped create a positive atmosphere around the club.
Through their light-hearted personalities and keen desire to push themselves, they have had a great effect on the rest of the squad.
Cunha’s quotes on Mbeumo
In an interview with Premier League Productions, the Brazilian highlighted everything he loved about his relationship with Mbeumo and what he brings to the team on the pitch.
“A lot of energy. What a lovely guy. I’m around him every day, he’s someone that is fun. I always play against him, and we talk about the games that we played in the past, Brentford against Wolves.
“He’s very intelligent, he’s very clever, so he can use his strength very, very good, like going to space, he shoots so well, so good. This is the kind of number nine we need to have.
“Of course, he’s someone that helped us so much and it’s a pleasure to play with him. He’s more than the position that he plays. Being around him in the pitch, we know he can create something special.
“For me, he’s never an underrated player because I put him so high. He gives me the expectation that I know he can do. I know what I see, I know what he does and to be around him is special. He’s such a good guy. So I can never say he is underrated.”
How big has their impact been this season?
So far this season, we have seen both Cunha and Mbeumo play all over the front line, in every position, similar to their predecessors, Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho. In their last season at the club, we saw a severe lack of threat in attack from the two, with Rashford only scoring four times in the league and Garnacho only six.
Already this season, despite a slow start in front of goal, Cunha has netted six times, while Mbeumo currently sits joint fifth top scorer in the league with nine, showing a clear improvement in goal scoring courtesy of the new boys.
They are not the only players thriving with the new look attack; the club managed only 44 league goals last season, and they have already scored 47 this season.
Benjamin Sesko, despite some negativity from the media, has also bolstered the attack, replacing Rasmus Hojlund, who only managed four league goals last season. Sesko already has six in the league, with five coming in his last seven matches, suggesting he has found his feet at Old Trafford.
Cunha and Mbeumo have been a breath of fresh air around the club this season, and after excellent campaigns from the two last season, it was almost inevitable that the transfers would be a success.
