Matheus Cunha has calmed any concerns regarding a possible injury toward the end of Manchester United’s brilliant 2-1 win over Liveprool on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United claimed a brilliant 2-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, as Rúben Amorim’s side earned a vital three points at Anfield.
United struck early when Bryan Mbeumo finished sharply from a tight angle after a clever pass from Amad. Bruno Fernandes missed a big chance to double the lead, but Amorim’s men went into half-time ahead.
Liverpool responded after the break, with Cody Gakpo hitting the post before Amorim introduced Manuel Ugarte, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu, and Benjamin Šeško to lift the tempo. Gakpo equalised late on, but Harry Maguire’s towering header quickly restored United’s lead.
Despite heavy late pressure from Arne Slot’s side, United stood firm to secure their first Anfield victory since January 2016.
Cunha calms possible injury concerns
While Matheus Cunha is yet to register a goal or assist since signing for United in June 2025, the Brazilian has been praised countless times for his hard-working and selfless displays, particularly playing up front against Liverpool.
He worked tirelessly across the front line for the Reds and was particularly instrumental in disrupting Liverpool’s rhythm as they surged for a late equaliser. Just seconds before the final whistle, it was Cunha who won a foul in the dying moments to win back possession, which ultimately ended the game.
However, after that, those at Anfield noted that the Brazilian international was finding it hard to walk and was limping to the touchline.
Speaking with Stadium Astro, Cunha was asked if he was carrying an injury, to which he confirmed that his limp was purely down to an excruciating cramp in his calf.
“I’m so cramped,” Cunha said with an ear-to-ear grin on his face. “I’m, like, dead right now, because if I… I stretch my leg, I feel cramped, so I use, like, this method [of limping].”
Cunha happy to play a team role
There have been some comments about Cunha’s lack of end product so far this season, with the forward yet to register a goal or assist for United since his £62.5 million transfer. However, the player himself admitted that he is still adapting to Amorim’s instructions.
“Right now, [I’m adapting],” CUnha explained. “In the beginning, it is normal to need a little bit more time to adapt. And then I think in the last conversation with him, this kind of participation in the game was something that he asked.
“And then I think, yeah, every game, every week that we pass together is a little bit more time to learn and then showing that we can, I think, I can adapt and then try everything to do what he wants.”
He also spoke on his current lack of individual numbers, explaining that although he would like to be able to add more goals and assists to the team, he is more than happy just to help however he can on the field to secure more results, such as the Liveprool victory.
“Of course, everyone wants to perform more in individual terms, numbers, everything,” the 26-year-old admitted. “But I think the first point to be here is help the team to come back to the glory there is now.
“I think if this is my part right now, I’m happy. I’ll try everything. And then, of course, the other part of individual things will come, and then I’ll be happy also.”
