One of Rúben Amorim’s “really important” players has been warned that Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo’s arrivals could make life hard for him at Manchester United.
Manchester United are on the brink of completing their second signing of the summer, with a deal for Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo edging closer.
Rúben Amorim is eager to further strengthen his attacking options after the arrival of Matheus Cunha earlier this month, though talks over Mbeumo have been complex.
United’s opening £55 million bid for the 25-year-old was turned down at the start of June, but they returned this week with an improved offer worth over £60 million. Reports now indicate that an initial fee has been agreed, with both clubs working to finalise the add-on structure to take the total package to around £65 million.
Once Mbeumo follows Cunha to Old Trafford, United are expected to accelerate player sales and continue their search for a new striker and midfielder ahead of the Premier League kick-off in mid-August.
Mount warned that tough times lay ahead for him
When Amorim took charge of the United squad, it changed the future trajectory of many players. Those such as Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia quickly discovered they had no space in the squad, while Alejandro Garnacho has since been shunned as well.
Mason Mount has benefited from the head coach’s arrival, with Amorim publicly backing the 26-year-old despite his consistent injury problems.
However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant at United, Rene Meulensteen, believes that with the arrivals of Cunha and Mbeumo, Mount may struggle to secure game time next season.
“We have seen glimpses of Mason Mount when he got more minutes, he showed great energy and popped up in good positions in the box, which was promising,” Meulensteen explained.
“He has scored some really important goals for United, but the question will now be where he fits in with Matheus Cunha and maybe Bryan Mbeumo.
“He can only play in one of those positions off the front because he isn’t going to be a striker, and Cunha is not going to be on the bench. It’s going to be hard for Mount next year.”
Mount’s deadline for success is next summer
As reported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Mount wants to stay at United and prove himself next season, with Amorim also keen to keep the player.
However, it is well known that club CEO Omar Berrada has a general rule that if a signing does not show an expected level of success or consistency within two seasons of joining the club, they will be moved on and replaced.
When Berrada joined United, this clean slate for most players was issued at the beginning of last campaign, where Mount made just 26 appearances, scoring three goals.
Mount will stay this summer, but next campaign will be his second season since Berrada joined, and his third since he signed his contract; this season will become decisive. If he performs well, he will likely stay as a player who will fight in the attacking positions, but if not, United will likely cut their losses.
