Mason Mount ‘should be back in England contention’ amid impressive Manchester United form

Mason Mount’s resurgence at Manchester United has reignited talk of a possible England return.

After a prolonged period defined by injury and inconsistency, Mason Mount is beginning to re-establish himself at Manchester United. His recent performances point towards growing confidence and influence, offering renewed optimism about his long-term role under Rúben Amorim.

Mount’s first two seasons at United were heavily disrupted by fitness issues, preventing any sustained rhythm. Signed in 2023 to add energy and intelligence to midfield, he instead endured a frustrating cycle of setbacks that stalled his impact.

That cycle now appears to be easing. The 26-year-old is currently enjoying his most consistent run of availability since joining the club, and his improvements are indisputably evident: United have won 71% of their Premier League matches when Mount starts, compared to just a measly 25% when he does not.

Goals away at Crystal Palace and Wolves have provided tangible output, but Mount’s wider contribution has been just as important, particularly his pressing, positioning and link play in advanced areas.

Mount may return to England fold after up-turn in form

Mount’s upturn has naturally reopened discussion around his international prospects. Former England international Gabby Agbonlahor believes the midfielder could yet force his way back into contention if he maintains his current level.

“If he can get a run of games and perform like he did last night, Thomas Tuchel will be aware of Mason Mount,” Agbonlahor said. “He’ll know what he can do and what he did at Chelsea.”

The appointment of Tuchel as England manager may give Mount a confidence boost. The German worked closely with Mount during his time at Chelsea, where the midfielder was a key figure in their Champions League-winning side.

Reflecting on Mount’s display against Wolves, Agbonlahor added: “I thought his passing was spot on. His finish was excellent. He just needs a run of games now. If you keep playing and stay in the side, then why not?”

Jeff Stelling also praised Mount’s performance, describing him as United’s standout player on the night and questioning why an England return should be dismissed if his form continues.

England return not guaranteed

Mount has already confirmed that Tuchel contacted him after taking over as England manager, though any suggestion of preferential treatment was firmly dismissed.

“Thomas called me up,” Mount revealed. “He said he was calling a lot of players and just wanted to catch up. It was good to see his face and speak to him.”

But Mount made it clear that past success under Tuchel would not guarantee future selection. “He said to me: ‘There’s no guarantees, even though you played for me’,” Mount explained. “The competition is huge.”

The competition for an England call-up remains fierce. Phil Foden and Morgan Rodgers are in scintillating form. At present, Rodgers would be Tuchel’s first pick. Any return for Mount would require sustained output.

From a Manchester United perspective, that challenge aligns with Rúben Amorim’s expectations. The head coach demands consistency and intensity, and Mount’s recent performances suggest he is beginning to meet those demands.

Whether or not international recognition follows, Mount’s priority will be to maintain fitness and performance levels. For United, his recent progress represents a positive development – but one that must now be sustained.
