Mason Mount has admitted that it will be hard for Manchester United to qualify for the Champions League this season following a Premier League draw against Brentford.

Mason Mount almost became Manchester United’s hero of the hour as he stepped up to slot in a goal for Erik ten Hag in the 90+6th minute of the fixture against Brentford, scoring his first goal for the club.

However, the win was not to be as the Bees were able to match the effort even later in the 90+9th minute, with Kristoffer Ajer’s reply meaning the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Speaking after the game, Mount admitted that United were not up to their standards at the Gtech Community Stadium.

“When you go 1-0 up right at the end, you want to try and hang onto that,” Mount told Sky Sports.

“If you look at the game overall it wasn’t to our standard. We know that. When you score at the death you think you can maybe hang on. But maybe we didn’t deserve it.

“Brentford make it difficult. It is never easy coming here. They make it tough and get around you. Maybe we didn’t get it going from the beginning.

“We know we can improve, and we need to because we need to win games. We will improve, we will work hard. These are the games you want to win. We need to step up, and that is what we will focus on.”

Mount further admitted that it will now be hard for United to qualify for next season’s Champions League, even if it is awarded to fifth place in the Premier League this season.

“It is a tough one now, but all we can do is focus on ourselves,” he said. “We know what we need to do.”
