Mason Mount could become the 9th Premier League star to play for Man United and Chelsea: Can you guess the others?

Manchester United and Chelsea have been fierce rivals throughout the Premier League era and only eight players have played for both clubs in that time.

That number could be increasing in the upcoming summer, with Mason Mount looking set to move to Old Trafford.

David Ornstein broke the story, stating that the deal is worth £55 million plus an additional £5 million in “difficult” add-ons. Tyrone Marshall added that these add-ons are strongly dependent on appearances and success.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has reported that the midfielder’s medical will take place at the beginning of next week ahead of an official announcement.

Whilst the rivalry between United and Chelsea is not at the point it once was, in the mid-2000s they were regularly battling it out for the Premier League title and eventually clashed in the 2008 Champions League final, in which United came out victorious.

So it’s only natural that playing for both clubs in a career is rare. With Mount looking like he could be the latest addition to the small list, we look at the previous eight names in the Premier League era… how many can you name?

Nemanja Matic

The most recent case comes in the form of the Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic, who joined United from Chelsea in 2017 to link back up with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.

He played 154 times at Stamford Bridge, winning three Premier League titles in the process. After his move, Matic played five seasons at United, making 189 appearances.

Romelu Lukaku

Romelu Lukaku played at United in between two stints in West London. The forward played 98 times for The Reds whilst making only 59 for Chelsea, although he remains contracted at Stamford Bridge after spending time on loan at Inter Milan.

Juan Mata

The person we probably all think of when you ask who’s worn both shirts. Juan Mata. The classy midfielder spent three years at Chelsea and was a vital part of the team that won the Champions League for the first ever time in the club’s history in 2012.

He played 135 times for The Blues before moving across to Manchester in 2014, where he spent eight years. Mata became a fan favourite at Old Trafford, making 285 appearances during his time with the club, scoring 51 goals and assisting 47 times.

Radamel Falcao

Next comes the ‘what if’ signing that both clubs made. Rademel Falcao was a top striker before moving to the Premier League but suffered injuries that meant he never really got back to that level.

First came his United stint on loan where he scored just four times during the 2014/15 season. He then went to Chelsea on loan the following season where his tally decreased to just a single goal in 12 appearances.

Juan Sebastian Veron

Juan Sebastian Veron joined Man United in 2001 as one of the most highly regarded midfielders in Europe, but it just didn’t work out for him at Old Trafford. He played 82 times for the club before leaving to join Chelsea in 2003, where he appeared just 14 times as he spent two years on loan at Inter before leaving The Blues in 2006.

Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes is regarded as a Man United legend, winning two Premier League titles with the club and lifting the FA Cup three times in United red. After coming through the academy at United, Hughes left in 1986 to join Barcelona. Two years later he rejoined The Reds, becoming a key part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s first successful squad at the club.

He played 358 times for the club, scoring 132 goals, before leaving in 1995 to Chelsea, where he would spend the next three years of his career – playing 119 games for The Blues before leaving for Southampton in 1998.

Mark Bosnich

Incoming the difficult ones. Mark Bosnich re-joined United in 1999 after leaving the club on a free transfer in 1991 when he was just a teenager. The goalkeeper appeared 38 times for the club across the two stints, including 23 games in the 1999/00 campaign where United lifted the Premier League title.

He would leave United midway through the following season on another free transfer – this time to Chelsea, where he spent just over two years but appeared only seven times.

Paul Parker

The eighth and final player to have played for both clubs in the Premier League era is defender Paul Parker. The Englishman joined United from QPR in 1991 and spent five years at the club, winning three Premier League titles and appearing 136 times for the side.

He would go onto leave in 1996 to join Derby County and had short stints at both Sheffield United and Fulham before finding his way to Chelsea in March of 1997, where he played just four times before leaving the club four months later.
