Mason Mount and Matthijs de Ligt have completely agreed on Manchester United’s main ambition for the current season.
Manchester United bounced back from their loss to Everton with a victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park this weekend.
Despite going behind in the first half, the Reds responded impressively after the break, with goals from Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount completing the turnaround.
With a favourable run of matches on the horizon, United will aim to build momentum and strengthen their position in the league standings.
Their next test comes against West Ham at home and then they will face Wolves at the Molineux Stadium at the beginning of next week.
Mount and De Ligt completely agree on United ambition
While United are currently ninth in the Premier League table, a win against West Ham would move them into fifth-place and just three points away from Manchester City in second.
There is definitely scope for United to find themselves in those Champions League positions when the season progresses into the later stages and that is something Mason Mount is aiming for.
“We really need to kick on now and win more games,” the midfielder said after scoring the winning goal against Palace.
“That’s the most important thing, to win. Obviously a difficult result in the last game, but to come back and win was massively important. It’s time to really kick on now and shoot for that top-four position.”
This is something that has been echoed by fellow United star Matthijs de Ligt, who believes United belong in Europe’s elite competition.
“I think for a club as Manchester United, it is always normal to at least try and get in the Champions League. A club like United needs to be in the Champions League,” De Ligt told Sky Sports.
“Hopefully we can achieve that this season, that is the first step and then you see after what is normal.”
Amorim must secure UCL football
It is clear that United’s players believe that they need to qualify for the Champions League and it is something that Amorim must deliver in the eyes of many fans.
The inconsistency of almost all teams in the league means that those spots will be up for grabs, especially if fifth-place counts as a Champions League spot again.
United also have the advantage of not having European football this term and many of their competitors for those top spots are playing twice a week.
It is not unrealistic for United to secure a top four spot even though they finished 15th last term. Their biggest challenge will be to navigate games while players like Amad and Bryan Mbeumo are away at AFCON.
But in the tail-end of the season when teams are beginning to get tired with the amount of games, United must take advantage.
