Mason Greenwood produces U-Turn on Man United return amid Barcelona interest
According to reports from Spain, Mason Greenwood does not want to return to Manchester United, and instead wants to leave the club.
Despite reports last week that Greenwood would ‘be on the quickest flight home‘ if a Manchester United return was on offer, it has now been noted that Greenwood would prefer to stay in Spain.
This news comes after new Manchester United partial owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe stated that “no decision” has been made over Greenwood’s future at the Premier League club.
This season, Greenwood has spent time away from Old Trafford, with United loaning him to Spanish side Getafe, where has has produced twelve goal contributions.
Now, a new report from Spanish publication Nacional states that Greenwood wants to remain in the country, with La Liga giants Barcelona showing strong interest in the forward.
According to the report, Barcelona are eyeing up Hansi Flick as their next manager following Xavi’s upcoming departure from the club, with Flick a big fan of Greenwood.
Flick reportedly has ‘recommended the purchase’ of Greenwood, believing that he ‘will fit into their schemes.’
The report outlines that Greenwood ‘felt unprotected and belittled by the club in which he had played his entire life,’ and now will refuse to return to Old Trafford.
It is also claimed that Barcelona president Joan Laporta is ready to present ‘a formal offer’ to United, with the Premier League now prepared to almost half their asking price to accept a bid worth approximately £25 million.
This news comes in contrast to a report in the Sun, where last week it was noted that Greenwood would snub any interest from Barcelona if it meant he could return to Old Trafford.
In that report, it was stated that “If United threw him a lifeline to resurrect his career at Old Trafford, he’d be on the quickest flight home.
Greenwood had been suspended by the club before as a result of the forward being arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and coercive control. These charges were later dropped.
