Despite pushing to stay in Barcelona when his loan deal expires in the summer, one key decision could see his future in Spain come to an abrupt end.
Marcus Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan from Manchester United in the summer, with the agreement including a £26 million option to make the move permanent.
The 28-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, viewed the switch to Spain as an opportunity for a fresh start and a chance to step away from the intense scrutiny of the English media.
That change has proved successful, with Rashford impressing at Barcelona by scoring ten goals and registering 13 assists across all competitions.
Despite reports recently emerging that Michael Carrick “would like” Rashford to return to Manchester United, the forward has been clear about his desire to extend his stay at Barcelona past the summer.
Marcus Rashford’s future hinges on Barcelona presidential election
Despite Barcelona’s financial troubles, the club have indicated that they wish to sign Rashford when his loan deal in Catalonia comes to an end after putting on a number of great performances.
While the loan deal includes a £26 million buy option, the Spanish giants are reportedly unwilling to pay the full amount and are looking to negotiate with Manchester United to make a permanent deal possible.
As reported by the Manchester Evening News, the 28-year-old’s future at the club could now face a sudden collapse depending on the outcome of this year’s presidential elections at the club.
It is said that a deal for Rashford is one of the main priorities in Joan Laporta’s manifesto for re-election. In a boost to Rashford’s chances of staying in Spain in the summer, Laporta is the current favourite to be re-elected.
Permanent deal best for all parties
Although £26 million is certainly a very small fee for a player as talented as Rashford, a permanent sale is the best option for all parties involved.
While a fairytale return to Old Trafford would certainly please the fanbase, some of the abuse that the 28-year-old received from his own fans will stick with him, and it’s probably best for both parties to part ways.

Rashford has spoken in interviews about his desire to stay at Barcelona, citing his strong chemistry with the squad and his willingness to accept a significant wage cut to make the deal happen.
Whatever fee Manchester United receives for their academy product in the summer will count as pure profit for the club, which will be key ahead of the summer transfer window, where the club are touted to make several significant midfield transfers.
