Bruno Fernandes came under heavy scrutiny earlier this week after ex-Manchester United star Gary Neville shamefully claimed Fernandes had asked to be substituted in the 7-0 hammering by Liverpool last Sunday.

A video later released showed that wasn’t the case, with reports also clearing up that Fernandes had not asked to come off.

Fernandes has worn the armband for the majority of this season in Harry Maguire’s absence, while the pair both lifted the Carabao Cup trophy at Wembley after victory over Newcastle.

The Portugal international has played out of position, filling in on the wing when needed, and Rashford has backed his fellow teammate after such claims.

“I love playing with Bruno,” explained Rashford.

“He’s the perfect player to play with. He’s been a good leader for us, even when he’s not captain, which is always a good sign. He’s helped other players become better leaders and the reality is that we can’t be an organised team in terms of just one leader being captain.”

So far this season, Fernandes has scored seven times, contributing to 11 assists.

On the 28-year-old, Rashford continued: “He’s done a lot for us. I don’t have anything negative to say about Bruno. As the manager said, nobody is perfect. I support him and I’m 100% behind him.”

United are privileged to have a player of Fernandes’ calibre, who has missed just one game through injury or illness in his team at the club.
