‘They asked me…’ Manuel Ugarte reveals what shocked Manchester United stars about Rúben Amorim
Manuel Ugarte has revealed what Manchester United players were shocked by following the appointment of Rúben Amorim as the club’s new head coach.
Manchester United have confirmed the appointment of Ruben Amorim as their new Head Coach, following Erik ten Hag‘s departure from Old Trafford.
After a summer contract extension, ten Hag’s struggles this season saw United drop to 14th in the Premier League and 21st in the Europa League.
His exit was confirmed last Monday morning, with United acting swiftly to secure Amorim as his successor.
Amorim will officially start on 11 November as the international break begins, with his first match set for 24 November in an away fixture against Ipswich Town.
Ugarte predicts Amorim’s reign
United midfielder Manuel Ugarte played under Amorim while the 23-year-old was at Sporting, and he explained that he feels the club dynamic will change once Amorim arrives at the Carrington training facility.
“I saw that Sporting fans were upset, and that’s understandable because the coach is a great coach,” Ugarte explained to DAZNPortugal after the club’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea.
“It’s good for United. We have to take advantage of it and get him to convey his ideas as quickly as possible.
“I think it’s going to be a different dynamic, and the day-to-day will be similar to Sporting’s. The league, the country, the football… It’s a big challenge for him, but we all know he has the ability.
“It’s positive, mainly because the club needs to start building a path, which is important, and the coach will be key to that.”
What surprised United players
Further, Ugarte explained that his United comrades have been quizzing him about Amorim since his appointment as the next head coach was announced.
He revealed that many players were surprised to learn that Amorim is only 39, which will make him United’s youngest-ever coach in the Premier League era.
Ugarte said: “My teammates have asked a lot about him. What surprised them was his age.
“He’s also very hungry to win, and that’s very important. I can tell he’ll enjoy it.”
After joining United on 11 November, Amorim will have two weeks to assess his squad during the international break.
