Manchester United’s stance on Kobbie Mainoo leaving Old Trafford in January revealed

Manchester United’s stance on a potential exit for Kobbie Mainoo in the January transfer window has been revealed.

Kobbie Mainoo burst onto the scene at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag, making his Premier League debut in November 2023.

He quickly impressed, shining in his first start against Everton and soon establishing himself as Casemiro’s regular midfield partner.

Mainoo’s breakthrough season culminated in style as he scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final, before representing England at Euro 2024; starting in the final defeat to Spain.

However, since Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Old Trafford, the 20-year-old has struggled for consistent game time. Frustrated by his reduced role, he pushed for a loan move over the summer, but the club ultimately rejected the proposal.

United’s stance on Mainoo leaving Old Trafford in January

Mainoo is still yet to start a Premier League game this season and it doesn’t seem like Amorim will make a change in midfield anytime soon.

If he continues to sit on the bench, the academy graduate will inevitably push for an exit in the January transfer window, either on loan or for a permanent deal.

But according to reports from Graeme Bailey, the Reds have no intentions of allowing Mainoo to depart the club during the mid-season window even though he is not playing regularly.

“Speaking to sources within the club – as far as they are concerned in terms of Kobbie Mainoo’s future, in the short-term it is still at Old Trafford,” Bailey told UnitedInFocus.

“United insist they have no plans to let him leave in January, be it loan or permanent.”

United need to find Mainoo solution

United were always going to struggle to give out regular game-time to everyone this season without competing in European football.

But it seemed like the United boss would look to give Mainoo more time on the pitch this term after he worked hard over the summer.

The talent Mainoo has is undeniable and it feels wasteful to have him sitting on the bench for the majority of the season. A solution needs to be found.

Pairing him with Bruno Fernandes seems risky, while moving the club captain forward and using Mainoo alongside Casemiro appears to be the best way to get him in the team.
