Ruben Amorim is yet to introduce one tactic at Manchester United which saw his Sporting side blow teams away in Portugal.
Manchester United appointed Ruben Amorim in November last year after club chiefs decided to relieve Erik ten Hag of his duties as manager.
Amorim, 40, was viewed as one of Europe’s most exciting head coaches through his excellent work at Sporting, who he left in brilliant shape.
They were top of the Portuguese league and the Champions League when United came calling with a proposal that Amorim could not say no to.
Since that point, the new United boss has experienced difficulties implementing his style of play at Old Trafford amid a hectic schedule.
Amorim missing suitable wingbacks at United
One of the most prominent aspects of an Amorim team is the use of the wingbacks in the 3-4-3 system. They are crucial to the team’s attacking play.
At Sporting, both players on the flanks were more than usually natural attacking talent who could make a difference in the final third.
That has not yet been the case at Old Trafford due to the personnel available. For the most part, Amorim has been using Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui – both who are natural defenders.
Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu was signed in January and has played a handful of games now on the left. The difference is striking, with the young Dane more comfortable attacking on the flank.
However, United have still mostly been using Dalot on the opposite side as the 20-year-old and it remains clear that he does not suit the wingback role.
United injury update allows Amorim to trial tactic
Fresh reports this week have suggested that Amad could make an early return from injury after initially being expected to be out for the remainder of the season.
The Ivorian has been injured since mid-February but was one of Amorim’s best performing players beforehand. He has six goals and five assists under the Portuguese boss.
With a potential return before the end of the campaign, Amad could help Amorim trial the tactic which saw him blow teams away in Portugal.
Using both Amad and Dorgu as wingbacks could help United’s attacking play a lot and while there may be some concerns over the defensive abilities of that duo, it is something that Amorim will definitely want to test out.
While some games may require a more natural defender in one of those positions, some matches will certainly allow the freedom of two attacking-minded players on the flanks.
