Manchester United’s last 20 academy graduates and where they are now after Tyler Fredricson debut

Manchester United defender Tyler Fredricson made his Manchester United debut on Sunday afternoon against Wolves to become the 254th Academy graduate at the club.

Bringing through youth players has long been part of Manchester United’s DNA and that remains the case in the modern era.

Under Ruben Amorim, three youth team players have made their first-team debuts so far with the latest coming against Wolves as Tyler Fredricson started the game and impressed.

Following on from that game, UtdDistrict have decided to look back on the last 20 Academy graduates at Old Trafford to look at where they are now.

Some players have joined other clubs within England while others have moved abroad to continue their careers. There are also some who still remain at United.

United’s last 20 Academy graduates: Where are they now?

As mentioned, Tyler Fredricson (#254) made his debut against Wolves and looked extremely comfortable in the defence. Harry Amass’ (#253) first appearance didn’t come long before when he came off the bench against Leicester City last month.

Chido Obi (#252) and Toby Collyer (#251) have also both earned their debuts this season – Obi against Tottenham Hotspur and Collyer in the Community Shield at the beginning of the campaign. All four of them are in and around the first-team squad at Old Trafford.

Ethan Wheatley (#250) coming onto the pitch against Sheffield United in April 2024 was a significant moment for the Academy and the young striker remains at United, currently spending the season on loan at Walsall.

Omari Forson (#249), Willy Kambwala (#248) and Dan Gore (#247) made their debuts before Wheatley during last season and two of those players have departed the club. Forson now plays for Italian side Monza while Kambwala joined Villarreal in the summer. Gore remains at United but has experienced several injury setbacks since his debut.

Before that, it was Kobbie Mainoo (#246), Charlie McNeill (#245) and Alejandro Garnacho (#244) who became Academy graduates. While McNeill now plays for Sheffield Wednesday, Mainoo and Garnacho have become first-team regulars at Old Trafford and they both scored in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City last term.

In December 2021, three Academy debuts occurred in a Champions League game against BSC Young Boys. Midfield duo Charlie Savage (#243) and Zidane Iqbal (#242) both came off the bench while veteran ‘keeper Tom Heaton (#241) finally made his debut for the club after coming through the ranks a long time beforehand. Savage and Iqbal now play for Reading and Utrecht respectively while Heaton remains as a backup goalkeeper at United.

Will Fish (#240) and Hannibal Mejbri (#239) became Academy graduates against Wolves on the final day of the 2020/21 campaign – a game best-remembered for Amad shining as a false-nine. Both player departed Old Trafford permanently last summer, with Fish joining Cardiff City and Hannibal moving to Burnley.

Anthony Elanga (#238) is currently shining for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League and he made his United debut in May 2021. The winger made 55 appearances for the first-team before departing in the summer of 2023.

Shola Shoretire (#237), Dean Henderson (#236) and Teden Mengi (#235) also made their debuts earlier in the same season and all were highly rated players in the Academy. Shoretire nows plays for Greece club PAOK, Henderson for Crystal Palace and Mengi at Luton Town.

In a game which included six Academy debuts, Largie Ramazani (#234) was 20th name on this list after coming on as a second-half substitute against Astana in November 2019. After departing the club for Almería in 2020, Ramazani now plays for Leeds United in the Championship.

More debuts are expected to come at Old Trafford this season and beyond.
