Manchester United’s ex-academy star tipped for extraordinary Old Trafford return, he could “start” under new manager

A former Manchester United academy starlet has been impressing for new Championship side recently, finding form in an inspired Carabao Cup comeback on Wednesday.

Many former Manchester United academy prospects have gone on to succeed at other clubs. With numerous changes in management and behind the scenes, the Reds have had to let go of some of their most promising players.

Angel Gomes and Mason Greenwood have been the most recent players to impress away from Manchester, as both put in a top-tier performance in the Champions League for Marseille this week.

Alvaro Fernadez, while raising revenue for investment last summer, also impressed in the Champions League, and has become a staple player in the Real Madrid squad.

On Wednesday, Championship side Swansea produced a comeback against European presence Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup, and one particular former United academy prospect impressed and has been tipped for a potential return to Manchester.

Galbraith rising through the Football League

After leaving the Reds in 2023 on a permanent transfer to Leyton Orient in League One, Ethan Galbraith quickly became a household name in Orient’s promotion challenge.

Beforehand, Galbraith impressed during loan spells at Doncaster Rovers and Salford City, which sparked the interest of Leyton Orient.

Now, Galbraith plays his football in Wales for Swansea, and after joining last summer, has been impressive so far this season for the Championship outfit, including in their shock Carabao Cup win over Nottingham Forest this week.

Since he departed from United, Galbraith has made his debut for Northern Ireland, and has been hailed a very exciting talent by now retired Stuart Dallas, “His footballing brain as well, we were talking about the spaces he picks up on the pitch, he’s really clever.”

Galbraith tipped with potential United return

Despite leaving the club not too long ago, Galbraith has been deemed a suitable central midfield prospect for Ruben Amorim’s United side.

The Reds have highlighted a central midfielder as a priority target for future transfer windows, after Amorim’s side failed to sign one last summer transfer window.

With heavy links to exciting prospect Carlos Baleba, the club looked certain to make a move; however, the finances involved did not suit INEOS’ new financial methods.

Galbraith could be a decent and less expensive alternative, with News Letter tipping the Northern Irish international to return to Old Trafford.

They claim that the academy graduate could be a starter in a three-man midfield at United, which would likely only come if Amorim was replaced by a new manager.

“Galbraith could be perfect [for United] in this regard, to come in and play a role in the squad, although in a three-man midfield, he could be a starter, depending on what happens with the manager. Galbraith is one to watch,” they wrote.

The side has been crying out for fresh feet in the centre of the pitch, and the United faithful would likely be open to a return for Galbraith.
