The Premier League have confirmed who will referee Manchester United’s tie against West Ham as Rúben Amorim looks for domestic redemption.
Off the back of securing a place in the Europa League final with a stunning 4-1 win over Athletic Club in midweek, Manchester United are turning their attention back to the Premier League.
Rúben Amorim’s men are gearing up for their penultimate Old Trafford fixture of the season and their last in the stadium before the final as they welcome West Ham to Manchester.
With the Premier League not the club’s priority in the remaining few games of the season, the head coach is expected to look to hand Academy players extra minutes as he figures out the starting side he wants to deploy in Bilbao in two weeks’ time.
However, with United sitting 15th in the league table, there is a point of pride that must be fought for as the side looks to reduce the damage on what has been a poor domestic campaign for the club.
Premier League confirm United vs West Ham referees
Jarred Gillett (pictured above) will be the referee on Sunday afternoon in Bournemouth. Gillett has officiated 14 Premier League fixtures this season, four in the Championship, and three across other competitions.
Gillett has met United twice this season. The first time out was in the Community Shield during a penalty shootout loss after a 1-1 draw against Manchester City. He was then the officiant as United lost 1-0 against Nottingham Forest last month.
So far this season, Gillett has issued 59 yellow cards in the Premier League and 84 across all competitions. He has issued one red card this season via two yellow cards and has awarded three penalties, two of which came in the Premier League.
During the game, Neil Davies and Derek Eaton will serve as Gillett’s assistant referees. Adam Herczeg will be the fourth official on Sunday afternoon, separating Amorim and Graham Potter.
Andy Madley has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee. Craig Taylor will act as assistant VAR.
Amorim will be looking for redemption vs West Ham
As mentioned above, United have lost both of their fixtures officiated by Gillet this season, a fact Amorim will be looking to overturn on Sunday afternoon.
However, the West Ham tie is also the perfect chance for Amorim and his side to redeem themselves domestically after the Reds’ shocking Premier League campaign.
In their last six appearances in the competition, United have not won in their previous six, drawing twice and losing four – their last win came in mid-March, a 3-0 victory over Leicester City.
The game at Old Trafford is set to be the club’s final one before the Europa League final, with the tie against Chelsea next week at Stamford Bridge.
The West Ham game is the perfect chance to redeem themselves and gather some form ahead of the Europa League final, and also a chance for Amorim to showcase his options ahead of the Tottenham clash in Bilbao.
