Manchester United have been urged to sign a player from the Saudi Pro League in the January transfer window and the move would help two stars.
Manchester United’s campaign has started in mixed fashion, with the team sitting 10th in the Premier League after seven matches.
Defeats to Arsenal, Manchester City, and Brentford have been balanced by wins over Chelsea, Sunderland, and Burnley, while their clash with Fulham finished in a draw.
Under Ruben Amorim, the Reds have displayed moments of promise alongside lingering issues, and many supporters feel the team’s progress has fallen short of expectations.
There is still plenty of time before the January transfer window opens but United could end up looking for signings in the market to help them kick on in the second half of the season.
United urged to sign Saudi Pro League star in January
If United were to do any business in the mid-season window, many would hope that it would be the signing of a new midfielder.
But ex-Premier League star Danny Simpson has urged the club to sign Ivan Toney from Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli and he also believes that the move could help Toney return to the England squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
In an interview with the Metro, Simpson said: “He’s obviously got the temperament and he knows the league.
“I actually think as well, because he’s been out in Saudi Arabia, he would actually now come back to maybe play a different role where you are a rotation option. You’re going to get a lot of games, but you might start, you might come off the bench.
“So I think that’s something, if I were him, you can’t turn that down. Coming to the club like Man United and playing a different kind of role, because you’ve been in Saudi Arabia – that might give him a chance to get with England in the summer, because we’re still short of various strikers…”
Toney signing would help two United stars
Benjamin Šeško has started well at Old Trafford and has scored two goals in his last two games but it would be helpful to have an experienced no.9 alongside him.
Even though Matheus Cunha can operate through the middle if Šeško needs time out of the team, you would lose the attributes a natural striker brings to the table.
Toney’s potential arrival would also be good news for Bryan Mbeumo, who struck a brilliant partnership with the England striker during their time together at Brentford. They would undoubtably find that connection again at Old Trafford if given the chance.
Although, even if this potential move would help certain players, it would not make sense to prioritise over a midfield signing, which is clearly a weakness in United’s squad.
