Manchester United are set to play in the Europa League round-of-16 next month, with multiple potential opponents for that clash.

Manchester United secured automatic qualification to the Europa League round-of-16 after remaining unbeaten through the league phase.

The Reds looked to be in trouble after drawing their opening three fixtures in the competition, but five wins followed and Ruben Amorim’s side finished third in the table.

Amorim made it clear that United avoiding the play-off rounds was crucial for him. The Reds have been afforded two full weeks of training.

The round-of-16 games will be played on March 6 and 13, and the Reds are coming closer to figuring out their opponents.

United unlikely to face incredible star in Europa League

It was confirmed after the league phase that United had four potential opponents for their round-of-16 clash.

Amorim’s side will face one of AZ Alkmaar, Galatasaray, Midtjylland or Real Sociedad – all teams competing against each other in the play-off rounds.

After those ties are complete, United will officially discover their opponents when the Europa League draw is made on Friday, February 21.

Following the first-leg play-off games, those at Old Trafford are closer to knowing who they will face and it seems like they could avoid one “incredible” star.

Galatasaray suffered a surprise 4-1 defeat to AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night in their first-leg clash, while Midtjylland lost 2-1 against Real Sociedad.

The Turkish side have a lot to do in the reverse fixture at their home ground to secure qualification to the round-of-16.

Victor Osimhen was unavailable for selection due to suspension and will be hoping to turn things around for his team next week, but as things stand it seems unlikely that United will be facing the “incredible” forward.

Osimhen has been linked with a move to United, and is regarded as one of the best strikers in Europe.

Europa League is significant for United

United will always want to win every competition they are in, but this year’s Europa League campaign feels even more significant considering the position they find themselves in.

Finances are concerning and securing Champions League football for next season would be a huge boost. But that is no longer realistic through the Premier League, with the Reds sitting 13th in the table.

The only way United could enter European’s elite competition for next season is through winning the Europa League this term.

Jose Mourinho’s United side did a similar feat in 2017, when they finished outside the top four but won the trophy to secure Champions League qualification.

Amorim’s side have an even bigger advantage due to the competition’s changed format. Champions League clubs no longer drop down to the Europa League if they finish third in their group.

Even with United’s poor form this season, they are still a favourite to go all the way and win the tournament. Their performance in the round-of-16 should hint to whether they can actually do that.
