Manchester United have been told that Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton would improve their midfield quality if they signed him.
Manchester United are expected to pursue at least two new midfield signings this year as they look to rebuild their engine room following the departure of Casemiro.
During the summer, United’s recruitment team identified Carlos Baleba as their primary midfield target. However, Brighton’s valuation, believed to be in excess of £100 million, proved prohibitive.
This led the club to step away from negotiations despite having already agreed personal terms with the player, who was eager to make the move.
United also retain a strong interest in Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson, while Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has frequently been mentioned as another potential option.
United told Wharton would ‘improve them’ in 2026 transfer
United are reportedly eager to sign Anderson this summer but many would also like Wharton as an option due to his ability on the ball.
Alan Shearer has been discussing the Crystal Palace midfielder and stated how he would improve United, as well as some other top teams, although he is slightly concerned over his injury history.
“I think Adam Wharton is a brilliant talent. Crystal Palace got a great deal when signing him from Blackburn for around £20 million,” Shearer told Betfair.
“I don’t know what the cost would be to get him out there, it’s a very tough time for Palace, I seen they are in the running to sign Strand Larsen.
“Whether that would compensate for Mateta leaving before deadline day if that’s what they’re trying to do but it seems as if it’s pretty chaotic at Crystal Palace at the moment.
“If Wharton was to leave Palace, he would have a lot of clubs after him. And I mean the big clubs as well who have got money to spend. He would also cost a few quid.
“Wherever he went, if he went to Man United, he would improve them. Same with Newcastle, same with Liverpool. The only thing that I guess is the one or two niggling injuries that he’s had. But he’s a really, really talented player who will improve any team.”
United will only sign one big-money midfielder
United will certainly need a midfield rebuild next season. Casemiro is going to leave and Manuel Ugarte could also be on his way out.
At least one top level midfielder needs to come in, and potentially another one or two solid squad options. It seems like Anderson and Wharton would both be considered as the main signing.
United are unlikely to sign two players of that profile simply because it would cost almost £200 million. They need to spread their transfers out smartly.
