Manchester United ‘struggling’ to sell “excellent” 47-game player after £8.5m offer was rejected

Manchester United are struggling to sell one of their outcast players this summer amid Rúben Amorim’s continued need to raise funds at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are scrambling to raise funds this summer as they press on with plans to overhaul Rúben Amorim’s squad at Old Trafford.

The rebuild in attack has already begun, with Matheus Cunha signed and talks continuing with Brentford over Bryan Mbeumo.

However, those two deals have already used up the club’s initial transfer budget, so any further signings, particularly a striker and a midfielder, will need to be funded through player sales.

United are actively trying to move on Jadon SanchoMarcus RashfordAlejandro Garnacho, and Antony, while Rasmus Højlund could also be sold if the right offer comes in.

United struggling to sell Malacia

While many of United’s potential sales have made headlines in the last few weeks, one man who has been largely overlooked is Tyrell Malacia, whom Amorim has publicly admitted does not suit his wing-back system.

Malacia signed for United for around £13 million from Feyenoord in 2022 and was “excellent” in his first season, but suffered a horror knee injury in the summer of 2023 and missed 17 months through injury.

After 47 appearances for United across his two and a half seasons at the club, Malacia then joined Dutch side PSV Eindhoven on loan in the winter transfer window, where he went on to lift the Eredivisie title, making 12 appearances across all competitions.

However, the side passed up on the chance to activate their £8.5 million buy option in Malacia’s loan contract, and according to The Athletic, United are now struggling to generate suitors for the 25-year-old.

The clock is ticking on United’s sales

With Cunha secured and Mbeumo’s move considered just a matter of time after United submitted a second bid worth over £60 million, the club must secure their remaining transfer targets by raising cash through sales.

Amorim is well documented as wanting the majority of his initial first-team signings through the door by the time pre-season training starts on 7 July, or, at the very least, when the club flies to Stockholm to face Leeds United in their first pre-season fixture on 19 July.

While it’s expected that Cunha and Mbeumo will be in the squad by then, if Amorim wants a striker and midfielder to join the squad, United must ramp up their effort to sell their players.

If they sell the five first-team squad members who are certainly on their way out for the club’s asking price United will be able to secure close to £200 million in funding.

However, with the club lacking significant leverage due to the exiles of Rashford, Sancho, and Garnacho, this may become an increasingly challenging task.
