Rasmus Højlund has been struggling for goals under Ruben Amorim and Manchester United fans are beginning to get frustrated with the forward.

Rasmus Højlund joined Manchester United from Italian side Atalanta in the summer of 2023 for a hefty £73 million fee.

The young striker faced challenges during his debut season at Old Trafford but still managed to score 16 goals across all competitions.

After a solid return in 2023/24, expectations were high for further improvement this season. However, the reality has been quite the opposite.

Currently, the Danish forward has only seven goals in all competitions, with just two in the Premier League. He has featured in 33 games and is enduring a 16-match goal drought.

As the season progresses, Højlund’s overall performances have also declined, raising concerns about his form and sparking questions about his future.

Højlund’s comments on Amorim have backfired

Since Ruben Amorim took charge at Old Trafford, Højlund has scored four times in the Europa League and just once in the Premier League.

After netting twice against Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt in Amorim’s second game, Højlund spoke to the media after the game and claimed that he suits the system well.

He said: “For me this system reminds me of how I played in a 3-4-3 at Atalanta. It suits me well.”

Those comments, as things stand, have seemed to backfire for the centre-forward, who Amorim replaced with 17-year-old Chido Obi last time out.

Højlund’s place in the team is under threat despite the potential replacement being an Academy star with less than 45 minutes of professional football.

Deeney feels sorry for struggling Højlund

Despite his struggles and the criticism surrounding him, Højlund has received some level of support from ex-striker Troy Deeney.

The former Watford forward believes that the United man is not getting good enough service at Old Trafford and “feels sorry” for him at the moment.

“He’s willing to run but doesn’t get the service. There’s no synergy between the passer and him. The rest of the team looks at him and loses confidence,” Deeney said on BBC Match of the Day.

“He makes good runs but what’s he supposed to do with some of the balls he receives? At 21-22, you don’t know your body, your game. You need coaching, help but you need confidence from your teammates.

“There’s a little bit of me that feels sorry for him but you need to help him, keep feeding him balls and he’ll learn the hard way.”
