One of Rúben Amorim’s current crop has reportedly made it clear that he wants clarification surrounding his future on Monday amid rumours of a summer exit.
Manchester United return to pre-season training on Monday, 7 July as Rúben Amorim gears up for his first full season in charge of the squad.
The club have five fixtures lined up before the opening weekend of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, as United kick things off in Sweden against long-time rivals Leeds United at the Strawberry Arena.
They’ll then head to the United States for clashes with West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton, before wrapping up preparations at Old Trafford against Fiorentina, featuring former United goalkeeper David de Gea.
The Premier League have officially confirmed that United’s opening game of the season will be a home showdown with Arsenal on Sunday, 17 August, at 16:30 BST.
Onana wants clarification on his future on Monday
There has been a lot of noise surrounding Amorim’s goalkeeper position this summer, with reports suggesting that Aston Villa shot-stopper Emi Martínez was very keen to make the move to Old Trafford this summer.
With André Onana failing to impress last season, many assumed that the Cameroon international may be on his way out. However, reports have stated that it is unlikely the 29-year-old will be shipped away from Manchester unless a significant bid arrives.
Speaking on The United Stand YouTube channel, transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has now explained that Onana is set to seek direct clarification on his future on Monday once he returns to Carrington.
“At the moment, nothing has been communicated to Onana,” Jacobs explained. He’s not been told he’s going. He’s not been told he’s on the market. He’s not been told they’re looking for another number one.
“So his presumed position is, he’s the number one at Manchester United. But he would certainly like, when he gets back on that 7th of July, to be told directly, ‘don’t worry, we’re not signing another goalkeeper’.
“Then if anything develops with Onana, and he is to leave, Manchester United will look to see if they can find a number one.”
Amorim has made his thoughts on Onana clear
As exclusively revealed by UtdDistrict earlier this year, Amorim enjoys a positive working relationship with Onana, despite the player’s faults during the last campaign.
UtdDistrict understands that Amorim is a manager who appreciates Onana’s personality and attitude at United, despite criticisms that the squad lacks sufficient leaders at Old Trafford.
United are looking to strengthen the squad with players who can help the team dominate possession — a style that should suit Onana, provided the side becomes more comfortable playing out from the back.
At Inter Milan and Ajax, Onana was known for his ability on the ball. If Amorim adopts a more possession-based approach, it could unlock aspects of the goalkeeper’s game that United fans have rarely seen during his two seasons at Old Trafford.
