One Manchester United star has been told to stay at Old Trafford, with his struggles being due to the approach from Ruben Amorim last season.
Manchester United were dreadful as a team last season, with Ruben Amorim unable to turn things around during his first months in charge.
There were some standout performers under the Portuguese boss, such as Amad and Bruno Fernandes.
However, the majority of players failed to perform last term, including the club’s no.9 Rasmus Hojlund, who finished the Premier League campaign with four goals.
Hojlund, 22, has experienced major struggles since his big-money arrival in 2023 and there are now question marks over his Old Trafford future.
Hojlund told to stay at United despite difficulties
When Hojlund joined the club two years ago, Benni McCarthy was the forward’s coach within Erik ten Hag’s staff. The ex-Blackburn striker was a popular figure at Carrington.
He departed at the end of the 2023/24 campaign when there was a reshuffle in Ten Hag’s backroom staff before his eventual sacking several months later.
Hojlund has continued to struggle but McCarthy believes that he should stay at United, and suggests that his poor performances and partly due to Amorim’s approach.
“I think that Rasmus will be alright, I don’t think it’s necessarily just a problem with him. I think the club needs to properly adapt to understanding the principles of how Amorim has to play,” the South African told the Manchester World.
“He’s only young, but he’s so strong, he’s so powerful, but he still needs to develop some skills. The biggest thing he can offer is his speed and getting in behind players.
“I think we never set up the team to exploit that, and that’s why he looked like he was struggling.”
Hojlund exit looking more likely
Recent reports have suggested that an exit is starting to look more likely for Hojlund, with Inter Milan among the clubs interested in signing him.
United will definitely want to receive their valuation, which is over £30 million, as they search for ways to raise funds for further signings.
It would be a shame if he leaves United – especially because next season would likely be the first with another striker next to him and a more experienced frontline.
But on the other hand, he cannot have too many complaints as his performance levels dropped to an embarrassing low last term.
