A Manchester United star has been told unfortunate news regarding their international duty, Amorim has previously expressed his opinion on the matter.
Manchester United players are expected to not just be top performers for the club but also be of quality to be called up to represent their nation at international tournaments.
Many United players have been key to international success, Bruno Fernandes played every minute of Portugals Nations League winning tournament in June. Lisandro Martinez also proved to be a key part of a successful Copa America campaign for Argentina in July 2024.
With the AFCON tournament approaching in late December United will expect to face the losses of players Bryan Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui who will be representing their respective nations at the tournament.
United players will aim to attend the 2026 World Cup in North America to represent their nation on the world’s biggest sporting stage. Kobbie Mainoo has previously expressed his interest in playing in the tournament in regards to his lack of playtime under Rúben Amorim.
Shaw left out of England squad for final World Cup qualifiers despite positive form
Luke Shaw has started every game in the Premier League for United so far this season and has shown consistency and a flexibility to play both centre back as well as fullback. Despite his improved fitness and form, Thomas Tuchel has looked elsewhere to fill his defensive roles for England.
Shaw previously represented England at Euro 2020 where he famously scored in the final against Italy in just under two minutes. Shaw has since represented England, starting all the games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as well as featuring towards the end of the 2024 Euro’s campaign where England lost in the final to Spain.
Shaw has been a key player in the reimagined England squad that has been seen over the last five years but since Tuchels appointment in January 2025 he has not been seen in any of the announced squads, with his latest omission described as ‘extremely unfortunate’.
On Friday morning Tuchel announced his squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifying games against Serbia and Albania which does not feature any United players apart from loanee Marcus Rashford. Tuchel has favoured the likes of Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa and Dan Burn in defence over Shaw and Harry Maguire despite United being above all of these players’ respective teams.
Amorim expressed his feelings over Shaw’s England absence in the England Squad
October’s Premier League Manager of the Month winner, Rúben Amorim, previously expressed his feelings over Luke Shaw’s international appearances saying, “For me, I want him to go to the national team, but I also want Luke Shaw to train with me, recover with me, and be prepared for my game, so I’m a little bit selfish on that.”
Amorim believes Shaw is unlucky not to be in the squad but sees it as an opportunity to improve his United form. He went on to say “So if he’s not going to the national team, for me it’s fine, because I can control better what he’s doing.”
United face Tottenham on Saturday and Everton on the 24th November, after the International break. With winter fixtures piling up and AFCON absentees Amorim is grateful for squad fitness and is happy to see players like Shaw not risking injury during internationals.
Shaw, Mainoo and Maguire will all be aiming to feature in England’s World Cup 2026 squad but need to prioritise United form to catch the eyes of Tuchel who seems to be ignoring the team’s improvement from last season.
